A highly recommended experience, for the space, the kindness, and the food, which was delicious and entirely plant-based. The eggplant with miso was spectacular; the best I've ever tasted. Arigato gozaimasu 🙏🏽
You need to buy tickets for the garden to access the temple restaurant. The garden is very beautiful to visit, it adds charm. Regarding the restaurant, the food is excellent. There are many different flavors. I recommend this restaurant.
On February 10th (Saturday), the first day of the Lunar New Year, I visited Arashiyama/Tenryu-ji Temple and savored shojin ryori (devotional cuisine). The much-talked-about shojin ryori, though seemingly simple, reveals hidden depths in every dish. Take the soybeans, for instance; I thought one would be enough to taste, given my appetite, but after chewing, they offered a profound, subtly sweet aftertaste. The blanched cauliflower with sauce, where the yellow sauce tasted like mustard with a hint of sourness and a pungent kick (reminding me of another spicy, stimulating plant seasoning in Japanese cuisine whose name I've forgotten), transformed ordinary vegetables into a multi-layered experience. Even konjac, which I don't usually appreciate, was braised to perfection, offering a sweet, savory, and chewy texture. The soy milk hot pot surprisingly contained rice cakes... and once again, I ate until I was stuffed, leaving a large bowl of rice! Oh, and the peanut tofu had such a rich flavor – it kept reminding me of Shiyang Shanfang (a famous restaurant)!
Initially, we followed the navigation to the side entrance. Fortunately, the restaurant had a sign at the side door directing us to the main entrance. At the main entrance, you first need to buy a ticket to enter Tenryu-ji Temple's garden. After entering, follow the signs to Saigetsu. We were led to a Japanese-style room with a Daruma painting, which had four seats, two on each side. Since the other group of guests hadn't arrived yet, the staff allowed us to choose which side to sit on. Once seated, an English instruction sheet explained how to enjoy the tofu hot pot. Soon after, all the dishes were served one by one. The food was incredibly flavorful; I couldn't believe it was all vegetarian, and that such cooking techniques could bring out the true essence of the ingredients. Highly recommended, please be sure to visit Tenryu-ji Temple and try it.
The service and experience are exceptional. The food is served in three courses, and the staff monitors our progress before serving more. Everything is so delicious. The garden outside is truly zen. I would definitely recommend it to my family and friends.
The restaurant's location is a bit hard to find. You need to purchase tickets to enter. The food is exquisite and delicious. You need to cross your legs to enjoy it. It's worth visiting again.
It's delicious. Even though I usually eat meat, the vegetarian options were satisfying. At first, I had trouble finding the place; it's in a garden. You should do your research before coming.
Better than expected, a pot of hot tea was served directly, delicious, maple leaves can be seen outside the window, and small chairs are provided for those who cannot sit on their knees.
Delicious food. Dining inside the temple is a unique experience. Making a reservation directly is very convenient.
This is a must-eat option in Arashiyama! This set involved a large room for privacy and tranquility. The tofu was of the highest quality! And every dish was like a mini surprise, although it was my second time dining there.
