It was a great experience for my first time there. The sights, smells, and sounds were an eye-opener to what a thermal wonderland truly is. It has a rich history, and we had a wonderful host that morning to welcome us to the show. On-site parking was free; do head there early as it starts around 10:30 AM.

Très belle promenade, mais comme le spectacle de Lady Knox n'a lieu qu'une fois par jour, le parc est devenu extrêmement bondé. Nous avons personnellement préféré le geyser Pohutu et suggérons d'éviter Lady Knox ou de visiter le parc tôt pour éviter les foules.

Wai-O-Tapu Wonderland is a truly unique experience—something you don’t see or smell every day! The vibrant geothermal landscapes, bubbling mud pools, and steaming vents make it feel like another world. It’s a must-do to witness just how incredible nature can be. One highlight not to miss is the Lady Knox Geyser, which erupts daily and puts on an impressive display. The colors and formations throughout the park are stunning, and the walking tracks offer great vantage points to take it all in. Be prepared for the strong sulfur smell, but it’s all part of the experience. Definitely worth a visit!

The Lady Knox Geyser, manually triggered daily at 10:15 AM, with its precisely controlled eruption time and force, is truly a spectacle, though we won't discuss its pros and cons for now. At the Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland, besides the Lady Knox Geyser being in a separate area, there are three walking trails within the main park. You can choose to walk one, two, or all three, which take approximately 45, 60, and 90 minutes respectively. We completed all trails, stopping frequently for photos, and spent about 3 hours in the park. Various geothermal pools are scattered along the three trails, each with its unique color or appearance due to different mineral compositions. Overall, I feel this geothermal world is like a comprehensive version combining Taipei's Beitou Geothermal Valley, Yangmingshan's Xiaoyoukeng, and elements of Yellowstone National Park. It is a special geothermal landscape park well worth a visit.

If you want to see how geothermal activity impacts the landscape, and the art that the different chemistry of the lakes create, this is where you go! Be prepared for the stink, this is primarily sulphur pits after all, but I recommend you see it!
