Kumihimo Workshop at a Historic 370-Year-Old Braiding Shop in Tokyo
DOMYO, established in 1652 in Tokyo, is a traditional braiding company specializing in Kumihimo, a Japanese craft used in garments and accessories such as imperial court costumes, sword knots, and kimono sash bands. We have served the imperial family and re-produced national treasures in museums. Committed to preserving this craftsmanship, we handmake everything, from spinning and dyeing silk threads to braiding, ensuring the highest quality. "Kumihimo Experience by DOMYO," launched in 2023, offers visitors a chance to explore historical kumihimo archives and observe artisans in action.

This was definitely worth it! We went on my husband's bday. It starts with a tour and history lesson, which we both enjoyed. We had our 2 year old daughter with us and there was no problems. After you make your bracelet they give you fresh matcha. I definitely wasn't to go back and do it again!
The kumihimo experience was a lovely and relaxing way to connect with traditional Japanese craftsmanship. The setting was peaceful, and I enjoyed learning how to weave the beautiful braids by hand. The guide was informative, kind, and very helpful throughout the process. They explained the history and role of kumihimo in Japanese culture, and guided us step-by-step with patience and care. It was both a cultural and creative experience, and I’m so happy to take home a handmade souvenir with personal meaning. Highly recommended for anyone looking to try something authentic and hands-on while in Japan!
I was initially hesitant to book this one, because it seemed a bit expensive compared to other experiences. But since I really wanted to try Kumihimo I gave it a try and it was absolutely worth it! The guide for the group i was in, was super nice and friendly. She gave a quite insightful introduction into the history of Kumihimo and explained in detail the different types and what they were originally used for. She was fluent in English, which made me more comfortable to ask questions (because normally I feel like I’m being disrespectful to the locals when I try to talk English instead of Japanese with them). The actual braiding part was also very nice and she was always happy to help. The actual product is high quality and overall the experience is definitely worth the money!
10/10 recommend! It's a true insight to an almost forgotten art. It's definitely beginner friendly and you'll have help all the way! We got a thorough explanation of the company and their background in Komihiko along with the general background of this art. After that we got to pick out a colour set and started braiding, time will absolutely fly. It's very relaxing and definitely for all ages and genders! You need to expierence this, it takes somewhere between 1-2 hours total it think? And you get a totally handmade one of a kind item
The perfect mix of learning about all the incredible history and craftsmanship that goes into kumihimo with practical experience making yourself :) the staff were fluent in english, friendly and super knowledgeable and helpful. I found working on my piece very meditative and soothing surrounded by the soothing sounds of wood. highly recommend
Satisfied!! Location: Not far from two subway stations. Very easy to find using Google Maps. Instructor: The instructor first introduced the knots and the history of a century-old shop. Then, they patiently taught knotting techniques. After I mastered the techniques, they helped me take videos and photos with my camera. Experience: Not difficult to learn, but you need to concentrate a bit. Indeed, it's a suitable activity for calming down. Later, I also learned about another knot-tying experience and immediately participated in that as well.
Was fortunate to be the only English speaking student, so I had a 1:1 teacher (Makiko-san) guiding me so patiently and clearly, showing me around their gallery, explaining the history, teaching me how to braid. The process of braiding is very therapeutic to me as one concentrates to remember the steps and can just forget about everything else. It was truly a wonderful experience and at the end of it there is little snacks too!
Very good experience. Even a novice can do it perfectly. The short-haired girl Yuki-san speaks good English and is very gentle. She helped introduce and take photos throughout the whole process. The twelve strands are easy to braid, and the colors are very beautiful.
My husband and I loved this experience. The staff was great and very welcoming. We are always looking for cultural tours when we travel and this was by far one of the best tours we have ever done!!
Very nice experience, I definitely recommend it to anyone that has the opportunity to do it!
