Top sights in Chiang Mai

Situated on the northern rocky mountains of Thailand, there is no shortage of interesting and exciting adventures in Chiang Mai for all kinds of travelers. With its exquisite temples, colorful festivals, and beautiful natural attractions, this small yet impressive city promises a cultural experience like no other. Discover the best places to go to with this helpful guide!

Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep

Magnificently perched on a mountain more than 1,000 meters in height, Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep is one of the holiest sites in Thailand. Legend has it that it was built on the grounds where a sacred white elephant lay dead after carrying a piece of bone from Buddha's shoulder up the mountain. Its most recognizable part is the golden 24-meter shrine that gleams under the sun, but there's more to see on the temple grounds. Tourists can walk up the 300 steps and see ornate jeweled serpents on the rails, or take the elevator for a quick ride to the top. Located just 15 kilometers from Chiang Mai, a visit to this Buddhist temple is a quick getaway where you can even see great sights of the city below.

Wat Chedi Luang

Located inside the walled parts of the old city are the glorious ancient ruins of Wat Chedi Luang. Dating back to the 14th century, its most prominent structure is the impressive chedi or pagoda with four staircases on each side guarded by large Nagas or mythical snakes. Although there were plans of restoring the chedi to its former grandeur, there is no clear picture of what it used to look like, making it an unfinished yet breathtaking monument. As it is an active Buddhist temple, you can encounter monks passing by or even have a chat with them at certain hours. Though there is a small entrance fee to enter the temple, it’s a sight worth seeing, especially during sunset, where its facade is surrounded by beautiful hues of the sky.

Wat Phra Singh (Gold Temple)

Exploring Wat Phra Singh, one of Thailand’s most revered temples, is a must-do in Chiang Mai! After paying a small entrance fee, see the impressive golden stupa as it glistens against the sunlight, and the colorful mosaics and beautifully painted murals of the Lai Kam assembly hall, which depict scenes of the local way of life. At a small temple at the back of Wat Phra Singh, you can also find incredibly life-like wax figures of monks in a meditating position. Visit the “Gold Temple” and get a glimpse of classic Lanna art and architecture within the old city center.

Doi Suthep

See the awe-inspiring beauty of nature as you visit Doi Suthep, a mountain over 1,600 meters high. The mountain is also renowned for holding one of the most sacred sites in Chiang Mai, Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep, a glistening golden temple that is said to keep a relic of Buddha. But the mountain offers much more than that! You can have a peaceful walk through its evergreen forests and climb up its summit for spectacular views of the city. Home to many tribes, you can also get to know some of the locals and their unique culture and way of life to have a truly memorable and captivating experience. For tourists looking for a more cultural and down-to-earth trip, Doi Suthep is an ideal destination.

Chiang Mai Sticky Waterfalls Bike Tour by Trailhead
Great bikes and experienced guides (Ahkom, James & Vivi). (A bit of a bummer that the waterfall was closed (by no fault of theirs). Would have been nice to cool off and chill around the waterfall.) This is a well run company, trail was well thought through, You get a 4WD escort through the journey - in case you need a break from the steep road inclines. Plenty of hydration and stops offered along the way. Go for this, even if you are a beginner, the guys will know how to adjust accordingly. Great trip!

Thai Cooking Classes by Grandma's Home Cooking School
If you are interested in learning Thai cuisine, this is a trip worth participating in. From the traditional market to learn about the ingredients, and then to the classroom to learn about the various spices they grow, and finally, under the witty leadership of the teacher, learn the essence of cooking. Remember, don’t eat too much before you come, because you have to finish the cooking by yourself 😄

Elephant Jungle Sanctuary Chiang Mai
In this booking, I only got 1 person. We booked a separate program for him with the same date and time. Our first booking was for 4 people. We were anxious at first as we thought the 5 of us will get separated. But with the help of the "NOTE" section of Klook Booking, I was able to explain that we are all 5 people. And yes, we were together the whole trip. Yeheeey!!👍😁 P. Man was our driver and tour guide. He has the most pleasant personality ever. He also has a good command in English. He explained every detail to us perfectly - from time of travel, break time, arrival at the camp, and the program. Everything was well-planned and expounded! During our 4-day stay in Chiangmai, we could all agree that this was the BEST OF ALL. The experience of knowing more about rescued elephants and interacting with them was the complete highlight. We enjoyed feeding and taking a bath with them. Oh, in our eyes we were lucky as we were the only guests (5 people) that day since only a few tourists came due to Covid19. This is only for our personal benefit. But thinking about it, having only us in that program the whole day is such a bad flow of business. I felt bad realizing how much money and effort they have to produce everyday for the welfare of all the elephants even with a little profit. Everyone of us agreed of going back to this same camp next time as we hope to support their goal. We also gave P. Man a monetary donation at the latter part of the program to help survive their needs. We highly encourage you to do so. Please go to Elephant Jungle Sanctuary Chiangmai to find out how much you could help too. Thank you so much. Another plus points: +packed food was delicious, healthy, and clean +free EJS Tote Bags +all staffs were very cheerful and respectful. HIGHLY RECOMMENDABLE!!!
