Fantastic 5.0
From the moment, I was picked up at my hotel accommodation to the trip it was nothing but amazing. The tour driver was very knowledgeable and very ethusiastic during the trip. All of our itinerary and tourist spots were ticked off. I highly recommend to do this Tranzalpine tour from Christchurch to Arthur's Pass. It was my first time in Christchurch and I fell in love with the place. Castle Hill, Otira Viaduct and Devil's Punchbowl Waterfall is a must see + we get to see a Kea bird. I would surely come back next time.

Fantastic 5.0
Had a lovely day out with our guide John, who entertained us the whole way with his tales and humour. Do note that this is the version of the tour without the TranzAlpine railway, and they will combine both tour groups. You can still get on the train with their help, but it’s cheaper to just get the train package tour from the start. John helped to sort us out and the ride was definitely worth it!

Fantastic 5.0
Experience the ultimate Christchurch to Franz Josef journey (Day 1) with this immersive small-group tour via Arthur’s Pass. More than a simple transfer, it’s a masterclass in New Zealand’s rugged beauty. Our guide, Joel, made the trip unforgettable with expert timing and local insight. We dodged crowds at the majestic Devil’s Punchbowl and Lake Ianthe, enjoying every spot in perfect light. With a delightful lunch break in Hokitika, this tour perfectly balances adventure and comfort. Day two from Franz Josef to Queenstown was just as spectacular, thanks to our fantastic guide, Martin. His deep knowledge of the West Coast added so much layers to the stunning scenery. We explored the prehistoric beauty of Ship Creek and marveled at the turquoise waters of the Blue Pools. Martin’s storytelling and seamless pacing made the long drive feel like an adventure. If you're heading south, this is the only way to travel!

What to know before visiting Hokitika

Top experiences overview

Hokitika’s things to do are led by guided Tours and a smaller selection of Outdoor & sports activities, with Tours accounting for the bulk of bookings. Demand rises through late summer and peaks in March, then drifts down toward October and December when bookings fall sharply.

Activities by traveller type

Families will find guided Tours a convenient way to see local highlights, since Tours offer the widest range of options and can suit mixed-age groups. Couples often prefer scenic Tours for an easy, shared experience or choose Outdoor & sports activities for a more active, intimate outing. Solo travellers and small groups can pick between budget-friendly Outdoor & sports activities for straightforward adventures or mid-range Tours when they want fuller guided experiences.

What travellers from the Philippines book ahead

Most travellers here keep plans flexible — many bookings are made within a few weeks of travel — but the earliest planners typically book around two months ahead. If you’re travelling in the peak period of March, it pays to lock in popular Tours earlier than usual, since demand is much higher then.

Category comparison

Outdoor & sports activities are the easiest, entry-level way into Hokitika’s experiences, with the lowest typical price point and straightforward appeal for active visitors. Tours sit at the higher end of the price spectrum and also show the widest spread of options, from more affordable group departures to premium guided choices, making them the best fit for travellers seeking variety or fuller, curated itineraries. Together they cover both budget and mid-to-premium tastes, so you can pick a cheaper outdoor activity or upgrade into a broader Tour depending on how much you want to spend.
