Fantastic 5.0
From the moment, I was picked up at my hotel accommodation to the trip it was nothing but amazing. The tour driver was very knowledgeable and very ethusiastic during the trip. All of our itinerary and tourist spots were ticked off. I highly recommend to do this Tranzalpine tour from Christchurch to Arthur's Pass. It was my first time in Christchurch and I fell in love with the place. Castle Hill, Otira Viaduct and Devil's Punchbowl Waterfall is a must see + we get to see a Kea bird. I would surely come back next time.

Fantastic 5.0
Had a lovely day out with our guide John, who entertained us the whole way with his tales and humour. Do note that this is the version of the tour without the TranzAlpine railway, and they will combine both tour groups. You can still get on the train with their help, but it’s cheaper to just get the train package tour from the start. John helped to sort us out and the ride was definitely worth it!

Fantastic 5.0
Experience the ultimate Christchurch to Franz Josef journey (Day 1) with this immersive small-group tour via Arthur’s Pass. More than a simple transfer, it’s a masterclass in New Zealand’s rugged beauty. Our guide, Joel, made the trip unforgettable with expert timing and local insight. We dodged crowds at the majestic Devil’s Punchbowl and Lake Ianthe, enjoying every spot in perfect light. With a delightful lunch break in Hokitika, this tour perfectly balances adventure and comfort. Day two from Franz Josef to Queenstown was just as spectacular, thanks to our fantastic guide, Martin. His deep knowledge of the West Coast added so much layers to the stunning scenery. We explored the prehistoric beauty of Ship Creek and marveled at the turquoise waters of the Blue Pools. Martin’s storytelling and seamless pacing made the long drive feel like an adventure. If you're heading south, this is the only way to travel!

What to know before visiting Hokitika

What people book most and when

Hokitika draws most bookings for Tours, followed by Outdoor & sports activities, and demand peaks in March each year. Bookings drop sharply toward October and December, so the town’s activity rhythm is busiest around March and quietest in the late-year trough.

Best activities for families, couples and solo travellers

Families tend to favour tours that bundle highlights and make seeing the region easy, while outdoor and sports activities suit active families wanting fresh-air experiences. Couples will find tours appealing for guided, shared discoveries, and smaller outdoor experiences work well for romantic, flexible days out. Solo or small-group travellers often choose outdoor activities for independent exploration, with tours offering a straightforward way to join others.

What travellers from Malaysia should book ahead

Most travellers from Malaysia can stay flexible: typical bookings are made about a month to a month-and-a-half in advance, though the earliest planners lock things in roughly two months ahead. Booking earlier matters most for March, the peak month, when popular tours fill up.

How categories compare on price and audience

Outdoor & sports activities are the easiest, lowest-entry option, offering the cheapest mid-range price point and suiting those after active, budget-friendly outings. Tours sit at the higher end and also provide the widest spread of price options, making them the pick for travellers who want everything from mid-range guided experiences to more premium choices; they’re also the category that best suits families and couples looking for structured itineraries.
