Fantastic 5.0
From the moment, I was picked up at my hotel accommodation to the trip it was nothing but amazing. The tour driver was very knowledgeable and very ethusiastic during the trip. All of our itinerary and tourist spots were ticked off. I highly recommend to do this Tranzalpine tour from Christchurch to Arthur's Pass. It was my first time in Christchurch and I fell in love with the place. Castle Hill, Otira Viaduct and Devil's Punchbowl Waterfall is a must see + we get to see a Kea bird. I would surely come back next time.

Fantastic 5.0
Had a lovely day out with our guide John, who entertained us the whole way with his tales and humour. Do note that this is the version of the tour without the TranzAlpine railway, and they will combine both tour groups. You can still get on the train with their help, but it’s cheaper to just get the train package tour from the start. John helped to sort us out and the ride was definitely worth it!

Fantastic 5.0
Experience the ultimate Christchurch to Franz Josef journey (Day 1) with this immersive small-group tour via Arthur’s Pass. More than a simple transfer, it’s a masterclass in New Zealand’s rugged beauty. Our guide, Joel, made the trip unforgettable with expert timing and local insight. We dodged crowds at the majestic Devil’s Punchbowl and Lake Ianthe, enjoying every spot in perfect light. With a delightful lunch break in Hokitika, this tour perfectly balances adventure and comfort. Day two from Franz Josef to Queenstown was just as spectacular, thanks to our fantastic guide, Martin. His deep knowledge of the West Coast added so much layers to the stunning scenery. We explored the prehistoric beauty of Ship Creek and marveled at the turquoise waters of the Blue Pools. Martin’s storytelling and seamless pacing made the long drive feel like an adventure. If you're heading south, this is the only way to travel!

What to know before visiting Hokitika

Top experiences: guided Tours lead, outdoors follow

Hokitika’s most-booked things to do are guided Tours, with Outdoor & sports activities a smaller but distinct draw. Demand peaks in March and falls away towards October and December, so the best-known experiences cluster around the late-summer rush.

Which activities suit families, couples and solo travellers

Families will find Outdoor & sports activities appealing for hands-on, active days out, while Tours often work well for couples seeking curated, relaxed sightseeing. Solo travellers and small groups can pick from both categories, with Tours offering a wider range of styles and Outdoor activities providing an easier, lower-cost entry point.

What travellers from 香港 should book in advance

Most visitors keep their plans flexible — typical bookings are made about a month ahead — but early planners tend to lock things in roughly two months out. Booking ahead matters most for travel in March, when demand is highest.

Comparing categories by price and who they suit

Outdoor & sports activities are the easiest, lowest-cost way into Hokitika’s experiences, while Tours sit at the higher end and also show the widest price range, meaning you can find entry-level options as well as premium guided choices. Outdoor activities suit budget-conscious or active visitors, and Tours are better for travellers looking for curated itineraries or a broader selection of styles.
