Fantastic 5.0
From the moment, I was picked up at my hotel accommodation to the trip it was nothing but amazing. The tour driver was very knowledgeable and very ethusiastic during the trip. All of our itinerary and tourist spots were ticked off. I highly recommend to do this Tranzalpine tour from Christchurch to Arthur's Pass. It was my first time in Christchurch and I fell in love with the place. Castle Hill, Otira Viaduct and Devil's Punchbowl Waterfall is a must see + we get to see a Kea bird. I would surely come back next time.

Fantastic 5.0
Had a lovely day out with our guide John, who entertained us the whole way with his tales and humour. Do note that this is the version of the tour without the TranzAlpine railway, and they will combine both tour groups. You can still get on the train with their help, but it’s cheaper to just get the train package tour from the start. John helped to sort us out and the ride was definitely worth it!

Fantastic 5.0
Experience the ultimate Christchurch to Franz Josef journey (Day 1) with this immersive small-group tour via Arthur’s Pass. More than a simple transfer, it’s a masterclass in New Zealand’s rugged beauty. Our guide, Joel, made the trip unforgettable with expert timing and local insight. We dodged crowds at the majestic Devil’s Punchbowl and Lake Ianthe, enjoying every spot in perfect light. With a delightful lunch break in Hokitika, this tour perfectly balances adventure and comfort. Day two from Franz Josef to Queenstown was just as spectacular, thanks to our fantastic guide, Martin. His deep knowledge of the West Coast added so much layers to the stunning scenery. We explored the prehistoric beauty of Ship Creek and marveled at the turquoise waters of the Blue Pools. Martin’s storytelling and seamless pacing made the long drive feel like an adventure. If you're heading south, this is the only way to travel!

What to know before visiting Hokitika

Top experiences that define Hokitika throughout the year

Hokitika’s top bookings are led by Tours, followed by Outdoor & sports activities, and demand peaks in March before falling away toward October and December. Expect the touring season to dominate the shoulder months, with outdoor activities available but representing a smaller slice of bookings.

Best activities for families, couples, and solo travellers

Families will find guided Tours a straightforward way to see highlights together — those bigger-group options tend to suit mixed ages. Couples often favour Tours for curated, hassle-free experiences, while adventurous solo travellers or small groups may prefer Outdoor & sports activities for a more active, independent pace. Because Tours also show the widest range of options, they can cater to different budgets and group sizes.

What travellers from the United States typically book ahead

Most travellers from the United States book a month or so in advance on average, though the earliest planners secure arrangements around two months ahead; this matters most during the March peak. If your trip falls in peak_months, consider locking in popular Tours earlier than you otherwise would.

How the main categories compare on price and fit

Outdoor & sports activities are the easiest way in on price, sitting at the lower end of the range and appealing to budget-conscious, active visitors. Tours are the priciest median option and also offer the widest spread of choices, from entry-level to more premium experiences, making them suitable for families, couples and travellers seeking curated itineraries. Choose Outdoor & sports for lower-cost activity and Tours when you want more variety or a higher-end option.
