Fantastic 5.0
From the moment, I was picked up at my hotel accommodation to the trip it was nothing but amazing. The tour driver was very knowledgeable and very ethusiastic during the trip. All of our itinerary and tourist spots were ticked off. I highly recommend to do this Tranzalpine tour from Christchurch to Arthur's Pass. It was my first time in Christchurch and I fell in love with the place. Castle Hill, Otira Viaduct and Devil's Punchbowl Waterfall is a must see + we get to see a Kea bird. I would surely come back next time.

Fantastic 5.0
Had a lovely day out with our guide John, who entertained us the whole way with his tales and humour. Do note that this is the version of the tour without the TranzAlpine railway, and they will combine both tour groups. You can still get on the train with their help, but it’s cheaper to just get the train package tour from the start. John helped to sort us out and the ride was definitely worth it!

Fantastic 5.0
Experience the ultimate Christchurch to Franz Josef journey (Day 1) with this immersive small-group tour via Arthur’s Pass. More than a simple transfer, it’s a masterclass in New Zealand’s rugged beauty. Our guide, Joel, made the trip unforgettable with expert timing and local insight. We dodged crowds at the majestic Devil’s Punchbowl and Lake Ianthe, enjoying every spot in perfect light. With a delightful lunch break in Hokitika, this tour perfectly balances adventure and comfort. Day two from Franz Josef to Queenstown was just as spectacular, thanks to our fantastic guide, Martin. His deep knowledge of the West Coast added so much layers to the stunning scenery. We explored the prehistoric beauty of Ship Creek and marveled at the turquoise waters of the Blue Pools. Martin’s storytelling and seamless pacing made the long drive feel like an adventure. If you're heading south, this is the only way to travel!

What to know before visiting Hokitika

Top experiences and seasonal rhythm

Hokitika’s most-booked experiences are guided tours, followed by outdoor and sports activities. Demand builds through late summer, peaks around March, then drifts down toward the trough in October and into the quieter end-of-year months.

Best activities by traveller type

Families will find guided tours appealing for easy, organised ways to see local highlights, while outdoor and sports activities offer hands-on nature time for active families. Couples often choose tours for relaxed sightseeing and shared experiences. Solo travellers and small groups can mix both: outdoor activities for independent exploration and tours when they want a structured, local-led option.

What travellers should book in advance

What travellers book ahead Most things in Hokitika can be arranged with some flexibility, since many visitors typically book about a month ahead; the earliest planners reserve roughly two months ahead. Booking in advance matters most in the peak period around March, when demand is noticeably higher. Aim to firm up key tours during that time, while smaller outdoor activities are often still available closer to travel dates.

Comparing categories: price and who they suit

On price, outdoor and sports activities are the entry-level option and easiest way in, while tours sit at the higher end and show the widest range of prices and styles. Tours suit travellers looking for guided, hassle-free sightseeing and a broader selection of options; outdoor and sports activities suit budget-conscious visitors and those seeking active, nature-based experiences. If you want the greatest variety to choose from, tours offer the widest spread of options.
