Fantastic 5.0
Today's weather was quite cloudy, but our female tour guide and driver worked very hard, observing the clouds to find a suitable spot for aurora viewing. In the last hour before we had to leave, we finally saw the aurora, which was incredibly lucky. I'm very grateful to her for driving us around to find the best viewing spots and for helping us take beautiful photos. 🥰

Fantastic 5.0
Our 4-day, 3-night trip was excellent overall. I was a bit worried at first, but upon arrival at the airport, a tour guide met us. On the way to the hotel, we saw the Northern Lights, and the guide immediately helped us chase them and take photos. Due to limited room availability, we couldn't stay in the same hotel for all three nights. The guide assisted us with the hotel transfer and arranged for us to tour the city with explanations. For the three nights of aurora chasing, on the second night, we were arranged to wait for the Northern Lights in a house, or we could choose to wait in a tent. On the third night, we waited in the car. Hot tea and water were also provided.

Fantastic 5.0
I am Korean and went on a tour with Chinese tourists. The Chinese male guide was very kind. However, a snowmobile driven by another Chinese tourist went off the road and into the mountains ^^. The guide worked very hard because of that tourist. I got to ride the snowmobile for a long time. Thank you for creating unforgettable memories.

What to know before visiting Yellowknife

Top experiences and seasonal rhythm

Yellowknife is best known for cultural experiences, followed by outdoor & sports activities and a smaller number of guided tours. Demand swings through the year: bookings dip around May and rise sharply toward the peak month in September, with late-summer and early-autumn remaining notably busier than spring.

Best activities for families, couples and solo travellers

Families will find cultural experiences especially accessible—these are the most-booked activities and tend to be the easiest, lower-cost way into local life. Couples can pick from outdoor & sports activities for shared adventure or choose higher-end tours for special, curated outings. Solo travellers and small groups will appreciate the range: cultural experiences for budget-friendly options and tours when they want a more structured, premium experience.

What travellers should book ahead

What travellers should book ahead Most things in Yellowknife can still be arranged within a few days, but travellers here typically lock plans in around three weeks ahead, and the earliest planners book about six weeks out. Booking ahead matters most in the peak month of 2025-09, when availability tightens and demand is highest.

Comparing categories: price and who they suit

Cultural experiences are the cheapest entry point and are well suited to budget-minded visitors and families looking for straightforward, local-rich activities. Outdoor & sports activities sit in the mid-range and appeal to couples and active small groups seeking hands-on experiences. Tours are the priciest and show the widest spread of options—from premium, specialist trips to more expensive guided packages—making them a good fit for travellers who want a higher-touch, curated experience.
