The Japanese travel agency was very patient in communicating about the delivery of physical tickets. Since we were not staying in a hotel and did not have a front desk to receive registered mail, the travel agency's representative even left their personal phone number for additional assistance.
The location was appropriate; despite the heavy rain, we thoroughly enjoyed the view.
Customer service confirmed, so you can purchase with peace of mind. The Gion Festival is wonderful, allowing you to immerse yourself in the local atmosphere.
The Gion Festival has always been a major item on my bucket list. This year, I was lucky enough to arrange my schedule to be there exactly during the parade week, so I immediately bought tickets and reserved seats. The pedestrian paradise in Shijo during the Saki Matsuri (pre-festival) was wonderful, with lots of food and fun things to do. I even tried catching goldfish! 😂 But on the day of the parade, the 17th, I realized something was off. I think the seats themselves were probably only 40% full to begin with, and then quite a few people left after the first float passed, unable to bear the heat. To be honest, having a reserved seat and standing on the sidewalk behind to watch were pretty much the same. When sitting in the spectator area, you also have to worry about blocking the view of people behind you if you stand up. I suggest that if you're with children or the elderly, don't buy tickets. They won't be able to endure three hours. Eventually, I also left the spectator area and walked to the intersection to watch them turn. Sitting still, you couldn't see anything at all. Next time I come, I'll be smarter and won't buy reserved seats to bake in the sun. It would be more worthwhile to find a spot in a nearby building, sit down, enjoy the air conditioning from above, and overlook the scene. (Picture 1 below is the spectator area, Picture 2 is the intersection, for your reference.)
The core part of the parade are the giant floats. As these have no steering whatsoever, it takes up to 10 minutes to turn them around a corner. So, on your seat, you will see a float coming by about every 10 minutes. This is so boring that half of the people left the paid-seating area already before the end (see photo). Paid seating only makes sense if it is at a place where something “happens” (i.e., either the corners or where the Shinto priests greet the parade). This is not the case for the seats offered by Klook. The organisation (both on the Klook-part and by the local committee) worked flawlessly. The local organisers took care of order (definitely needed when there are many Chinese tourists around) and you also got some cooling material. Advice: Don’t buy paid-seating unless you have some health issues (so you need to sit down). Rather stand at one of the interesting places (see above) or start at the end of the parade and then walk toward its start (to shorten those 10-minute gaps).
