Fantastic 5.0
One of the BEST experiences of our Japan trip! From arrival, everyone was kind, patient and welcoming. We were three generations: my mom, me and my 4-year-old daughter, and they found matching kimonos for ALL of us! My mom and I are plus-size, and we had beautiful options without needing the ¥5,000 celebratory upgrade. They even had my daughter’s size and gave her a sweet little add-on. We also booked the 60-minute photography session directly through the kimono shop, and DO IT! 📸 Our photographer was amazing. He posed and directed us, chose beautiful locations, and captured individual, mother-daughter and three-generation photos. It was HOT, we needed restroom breaks, and we had a 4-year-old, but he was incredibly patient and never made us feel rushed. Just LOOK at these photos! We left with more than vacation pictures; we have family keepsakes we’ll treasure forever. 👘💕

It was 2 p.m. when I arrived. I originally thought I would be late, but unexpectedly, the hairstyling, makeup, and outfit change only took 40 minutes in total, and everything looked fantastic. The staff worked quickly and provided professional service. It's a really great shop.

You can wear a beautiful kimono even with the basic options, so go early and choose well, haha! All the staff are very kind, and they meticulously styled my hair even with the basic option! They also rented out parasols, fans, bags, and shoes! It would have been terrible without a parasol because of the heat. My feet did hurt after wearing the shoes for a long time, so I returned them after four hours...^^ There's nothing that can be done about the shoes themselves, so if you need them, bring your own sneakers or just wear the shoes you came in instead of renting. Kimonos are a bit hot from mid-May onwards. Please keep that in mind! Anyway, I traveled alone and had a great time taking pictures in a beautiful outfit~*^^* The clothes were pretty and affordable, and the staff were friendly, haha! Highly recommended. They also recommended an obi that perfectly matched the kimono design, which was wonderful ☺️☺️❤️

Mr Shine is an excellent tour guide speaking well in English, Mandarin & Japanese. I learn a lot from him, he is very hard working on his heard of tourist. Kyoto & Nara sequence is adjusted to suit the weather. Unfortunately it rained lightly the whole day & the sun did not "shine". I stll enjoyed being guided with fond memories provided by Mr Shine. Be careful not to feed the deers as I got pushed on my back by 2 male deers who smell busicuits carried by me, dirtied my clothes! I recommend to follow Shine's offer of 6 choices lunch which you pay to restaurant yourself, A Mr Shine's value added service.

A great experience and my daughters and I were made to feel very special with hair styling and dressing assistance. Tea ceremony was very informative. We enjoyed the authentic matcha and opportunity to take photos afterwards. A rainy day when we attended but we were still able to take a short walk to find a nice backdrop for some outside photos. highly recommended.

Fantastic 5.0
Our tour guide, who could switch between Chinese, Japanese, and English, and also spoke Korean, made sure every group member was taken care of. It was a huge benefit not having to research the history and stories of each attraction ourselves. They offered pre-ordered lunch, which allowed us more time to explore Kiyomizu-dera Temple and its surroundings, and the food was quite good. The itinerary was well-paced for the limited time (however, this tour is not suitable for travelers who prefer to savor sights slowly or spend a lot of time taking photos, as the time allotted for Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine doesn't allow for walking the entire Senbon Torii path!). The tour bus was clean and tidy, and the ride was smooth and steady. I'm prone to motion sickness and usually sleep on buses, and I didn't wake up due to poor driving.

Such a fun experience! 🎎✨ Definitely worth it! The staff were incredibly kind, friendly, and accommodating, which made the whole experience even more enjoyable. It was such a hot day that I even learned the Japanese word “atsui” (暑い) because of them! 😂 They had such a great variety of yukatas and kimonos, and I was so satisfied with the one I chose. It matched my skin tone perfectly! 🤍 My hair was also styled so beautifully, and I loved how everything came together. 🌸✨ Such a lovely experience overall. Would definitely recommend!

Located in Kyoto Prefecture, this historic temple is renowned for its Kiyomizu Stage, panoramic views, and rich cultural heritage. Kiyomizu-dera Must-See Attractions

Kiyomizu Stage (Butai)

The iconic wooden stage, also called the Kiyomizu Stage extends 13 meters over the hillside, built entirely without nails, a masterpiece of Japanese carpentry from the Edo Period. Visitors enjoy stunning views of Kyoto, cherry blossoms, and autumn foliage from this elevated wooden platform.

Otowa Waterfall (Otowa no Taki)

Flowing beneath Kiyomizudera's main hall, the Otowa Waterfall divides into three streams, each said to grant blessings in longevity, academic success, and love. Pilgrims often visit to pray for safe childbirth or personal aspirations.

Koyasu Pagoda

This storied pagoda, located on the east side of the temple complex, is associated with safe childbirth prayers and is a visually striking example of traditional temple architecture.

Principal Image and Temple Halls

Inside Kiyomizudera's main hall, see the principal image of Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy. Explore Okunoin Hall, a national treasure, and other temple buildings that reflect the early Heian Period architectural style.

Jishu Shrine

Located within the temple complex, Jishu Shrine is dedicated to love and matchmaking. In front of the shrine are two stones, and legend says walking from one stone to the other with eyes closed brings good fortune in love.

Kiyomizu Yaki Pottery

Visitors can explore the temple's surrounding area for traditional crafts, including Kiyomizu Yaki pottery, a local ceramic art form dating back centuries.

Kiyomizu Temple Visitor Tips

When is the best time to visit Kiyomizu Temple?

The ideal times to visit Kiyomizu-dera Temple are during the spring and autumn seasons. In late March to early April, the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, creating a picturesque setting. Similarly, from mid-November to early December, the autumn leaves transform the area into a vibrant tapestry of colors.

How to get to Kiyomizu Temple in Kyoto?

You can easily reach Kiyomizu-dera Temple from JR Kyoto Station by taking bus number 206. You can be dropped off at either Gojo-zaka or Kiyomizu-michi bus stop, and from there, it's a ten-minute uphill walk to the temple. Alternatively, you can take a taxi for a more direct route. For rail access, Kiyomizu Gojo Station on the Keihan Railway Line is a convenient option for travelers.

What are the operating hours of Kiyomizu Temple?

Kiyomizu-dera Temple is open from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with extended hours until 6:30 PM in July and August. During special evening illuminations, the temple remains open until 9:30 PM, with the last entry at 9:00 PM.

How long should I spend at Kiyomizu Temple?

If you're on the go, a quick tour of Kiyomizu Temple will take around 30 minutes. However, for a more in-depth exploration of the temple grounds, set aside about two hours to fully explore all the sites at the temple complex.

Brief History of Kiyomizu-dera

Founded in 778 AD, Kiyomizu-dera has a rich history spanning over a millennium. The temple was rebuilt in 1633 during the Edo Period, resulting in the structures we see today. Its spacious grounds and Kiyomizu Stage demonstrate the ingenuity of Japanese wooden architecture. The temple's name, "Kiyomizu," means pure water, inspired by the sacred Otowa Waterfall beneath the main hall.
