This glacier hike was a fantastic experience! We chose a time when, as it turned out, only four of us were in the group, so we had even more interaction with the guide. Our guide was Andrea from Canada (her Chinese name is 烈婭). She was very friendly and professional, and through our conversations, you could really feel her passion for hiking. During the process, besides learning how to walk on snow with crampons, we also went to two small ice caves to take photos and drank water flowing from the glacier. She also took the initiative to capture some beautiful photos for us. It was a truly fulfilling experience!
The original booking was cancelled due to strong winds but we were able to reschedule for the next day. Fortunately, the weather was excellent the following day, sunny with little wind, allowing us to depart smoothly. The shop provided snow boots, thick socks, windproof jackets, backpacks, sunglasses, beanies, gloves, and sunscreen for free loan, so you only need to wear basic clothing. The helicopter can seat about 6 people. You might sit in the back row on the way there, but don't worry, you could be arranged to sit in the front row on the return journey. The scenery from the helicopter is beautiful, offering views of Tasman Lake. After arriving at the glacier, we put on crampons, took our hiking poles, and followed the guide, walking and exploring among the glaciers. We saw ice caves and even passed through an ice cave that only one person could fit through. The weather was so bright that sunglasses were essential; otherwise, the glare would be bad for your eyes.
Andrea guide is so nicee and guide us well to different photos points, and clear explanations on safety measures. Definitely a must visit location if u come to Mount cook! the view is so stunning!
Registration was at 8:45, but check-in and changing started at 9:00. We were very lucky to both be in the front row of the helicopter, probably due to weight distribution. We were the first group of the day, and it felt a lot like an expedition. We watched the instructor carve ice steps to make it easier for everyone to walk, and then confirmed the ice cave was safe before letting everyone descend. It seemed like a lot of hard work, as the instructor had many small cuts on their hands. It was a wonderful experience.
This experience was incredibly worthwhile and unforgettable. The glacier changes daily; an ice cave that wasn't there yesterday was large enough for people to pass through today. Arriving by helicopter to this land, seeing the snow-capped mountains on all sides and the endless glacier, made me feel so small. I'm fortunate to have had this opportunity, as I didn't need to prepare much gear to experience it.
The itinerary includes free rental of hiking boots, socks, crampons, backpacks, and jackets. The guide is also very patient and explains important information in the most engaging way. Highly recommended! You must come and see the unique terrain!
What a rare experience! Although the staff booked the wrong date, luckily I noticed and corrected it in time. Before departure, you need to call to inquire about the weather (if the weather is bad, it will be canceled for free). On the day, I drove to Mt. Cook Airport (about 1 hour from Lake Tekapo). Upon arrival, go up one floor to The Helicopter Line Check-in. The guide will briefly introduce the itinerary and equipment (socks/snow boots/jackets/gloves are all provided). Although the weather was clear that day, the gusts of wind were so strong that the helicopter almost couldn't take off and had to be canceled! Fortunately, the pilot said that the weather on the mountain was milder, so we became the last group of the day. Then, some group members overslept and were late, missing the departure, so my wife and I ended up having the entire helicopter to ourselves! It only takes 15 minutes from the airport to the glacier. Upon arrival, the guide helped us put on crampons and distributed hiking poles, so walking on the glacier wasn't too difficult. Then we walked into some natural ice caves. The ice caves, lacking sunlight, appeared blue, which was truly beautiful! We stayed on the glacier for about two hours before heading down the mountain. The beautiful scenery on the mountain and glacier was truly unforgettable. The guide said that the area of the glacier has shrunk significantly due to global warming, so if you want to visit the glacier, don't wait too long~
I was very fortunate to participate in this trip. In the past six weeks, there were only three days of flying. Due to global warming, glaciers are gradually disappearing, so it is recommended to go as soon as possible.
It’s a fantastic experience! We are so lucky to have done this on our first attempt, and on a sunny day with no strong winds. The glacier walk is stunning, providing insight into how glaciers form and how climate impacts them. The helicopter ride was exceptional, and the guide was very professional.
Worth it! The staff were very friendly 👍🏻 The scenery is incredibly beautiful, a view you can't see from the ground. Remember to protect yourself from the sun ❤️
