We absolutely loved this experience! Our tour guide was so insightful, especially in the market. She explained so many things we would have no other way of knowing. Remember, this is a private tour for you and your group. So worth it! If you are in Kyoto, this is a must!
This is a brilliant market & cooking tour. It is a private tour for your group too. We had Momo as our guide, she was absolutely lovely and kind and knowledgeable. She ensured we tasted everything at the market, and then took us back to the studio where she helped us cook some of the best homemade Japanese food we have had! We had a great time and strongly recommend this tour. Thanks for having us Momo!
I had so much fun walking through the market and getting to know my guide. I had even more fun during the cooking class. It was so cool to experience Japanese cooking culture with a local and getting to eat an amazing meal afterwards.
What a lovely experience! The guide was super friendly and had great English. The food prep areas were clean and organized. The experience and education were interesting, and the food was tasty.
Local guide, Momo, is nice and friendly. She explained the historic market and introduced Kyoto's traditional foods. I learned how to cook a rolled omelet and Oyakodon. Momo is also a good cooking tutor, who broke down the cooking skills into easy actions. Oh, one more thing, the knife store. She guided me to a knife store and explained the knife categories. Thanks for the activity...
Market visit and cooking class given by a Japanese woman from Kyoto, which is a plus. Good explanations.
This was a fabulous experience. Our guide/instructor was lovely. The market is beautiful with lots of little shops showing their goods. Many of which are offering free samples to taste or try. You could wander around and try this without a guide but we definitely got more out of the experience having someone on hand who explained what we were looking at, acted as a translator, and told us a bit more about life in Kyoto. The cooking class itself was held in a clean and professional kitchen - well pitched for both adults and our 13 and 10 year olds and resulted in a very tasty lunch we then had in a private room.
The cooking class is near Nishiki Market. The teacher will first take us to the market to buy the necessary ingredients, and then we'll return to the classroom to cook. Teacher Keiko is very kind and friendly, and her English is excellent. There are basically three dishes to choose from. We chose Tempura Donburi and Oyakodon. They were simple and easy to make. Everyone visiting Kyoto must participate in this activity!
The classroom location is a bit hidden, and it takes some time to find. When I arrived, Yukari-sensei was already waiting for me. After discussing what to eat for lunch, we went to Nishiki Market next door to buy ingredients. Yukari was also very thoughtful and meticulously introduced the history of the entire market and its food. After returning to the classroom, she carefully taught me each step, allowing me to successfully make delicious tempura donburi.
