It was my dream to participate in a cooking class during an overseas trip, and I finally made it happen. I was so grateful that they didn't cancel and proceeded with the class even though I was the only one who booked today. The instructor was very kind and made the class fun. Even though my English is poor, they taught me easily. The market and surrounding tour, along with the history stories, were also very interesting. When I mentioned I don't like meat soup, they immediately modified the recipe. They said they would accommodate such requests even if multiple people were participating. I encourage picky eaters like me to try it! Also, they usually discard radish greens, but when I said we eat them in Korea, they instantly created a recipe, and it became a pickled side dish. They even prepared ice today, which they usually don't, because a Korean traveler booked, anticipating I might ask for an iced Americano. How thoughtful! I highly recommend this to Korean travelers too, haha. They also diligently take photos and videos throughout the class. The space is also very beautiful.
Alex's old village stories and Taiwanese folk tales, which he shared while touring the village, were delightful, as was the kitchen roll he bought for me during the market tour and the braised tofu (?). He explained everything very easily and clearly. Cooking was also fun. The kitchen is cool and very clean. They also provided tea or coffee in between, and after cooking, they offered cola and beer during the tasting. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a special experience during their trip to Taiwan.
Alex was super friendly! It was just me and my husband for the class. He brought us around Di Hua street, Taipei bridge and explained the history behind the area. We went to the wet market and even tried some snacks, he was friends with all the shop owners (whose been there for generations). We won't be sourcing ingredients at the wet markets since it's all prepped in advance, but it's more to understand local food and culture. Alex was patient and understanding, and definitely knows the area well. The kitchen space was cozy and welcoming, clean and well organized. He used to be a service instructor in the aviation industry and pivoted during the pandemic. 10/10 would come back again to learn other dishes from him and support small local businesses! He also helped us take so many photos and videos :)
It was truly a fun learning experience cooking Taiwanese food. Even though it was raining heavily that day, we still enjoyed going around the neighborhood and the market.
This was more than just 'a step by step guide' on how to make noodles, but an experience to have. From walking the streets of Dadaocheng to the cooking table filled with ingredients, Alex was a good knowledgeable host whom we'd recommend anytime! good experience overall.
I participated in a beef noodle lesson. My English isn't great, but Alex was very kind and taught me in an easy-to-understand way. Exploring the city's history and the market was so much fun! Alex took many photos, so I could concentrate on cooking.
Teacher Alex explains the history of Dadaocheng very thoroughly and teaches diligently in class. He takes you to the nearby market to buy ingredients, patiently teaching you how to safely hold a knife and chop vegetables. Even beginners will feel at ease. This class is also very suitable for both Taiwanese locals and foreign tourists interested in Taiwanese cuisine.
A very interesting experience, suitable for solo travelers, friends, or couples! You can sightsee, learn about local culture, and even learn to make beef noodles. The handmade lunch was delicious, and even beginners can succeed, as the teacher is very attentive.
The cooking class in Dihua Street, Taipei, was a truly valuable and enjoyable experience! Alex's Dihua Street walk and guide were also very informative. Even those who aren't good at cooking can feel at ease, as they adjust the pace to suit everyone. They also provide containers for leftovers if you can't finish everything! I'd love to participate again if there's another opportunity for such a service-oriented event! Thank you very much!
