Kyoto is loved for its rich culture and stunning natural beauty. No wonder, it’s a must-visit destination on any Japan bucket list! 📝 With thousands of Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines, historic districts like Gion, the scenic charm of Arashiyama, and unique local cuisine, Kyoto offers a glimpse into traditional Japan. That’s why it just makes sense that the next teamLab branch is opening in Kyoto!
What is teamLab?
In most museums, you just stand there and look at art. But teamLab? It’s a whole new world you step inside. Imagine walking through art that moves, changes, and reacts to YOU. Sounds like magic, right? TeamLab is a mind-blowing international art collective that mixes science, tech, and nature to create immersive experiences that totally shatter the usual “look but don’t touch” rules.
And guess what? It’s not just artists behind the scenes. There are programmers, engineers, animators, mathematicians, and architects involved here to make these one-of-a-kind exhibitions come alive. Trust me, you’ve never seen anything like this before. ✨
Born in Japan and now exploding worldwide, teamLab has nine branches across the country, the next one opening soon in Kyoto!
Klook tip: When visiting any teamLab branch, wear light-colored clothes. This will allow you to stand out against the installations to get the best photo. 📸 Try not to wear anything too short; some exhibits require you to sit down, and sometimes, even slide down.

What makes teamLab Kyoto so special?
TeamLab Kyoto is called Biovertex. Here, new and unreleased artworks are expected to be displayed—ones that cannot be seen anywhere else in Japan. It’s also going to be the biggest teamLab in Japan, spanning almost 12,000 yards! It opens on October 7, so make sure to add this to your Kyoto itinerary.
Klook tip: We recommend wearing comfy shoes such as trainers when you visit. Avoid wearing high heels or anything heavy; you want to move around as swiftly as possible.
Since teamLab hasn’t officially opened its doors yet, there’s still a lot to uncover. The theme is described as “transcending conventional notions of material substances.” This may sound pretty vague, so let’s take a quick look at some of the installations to get a clearer picture of what that actually means.
1. Morphing Continuum
Enter a room full of floating, dynamic spheres that come together as one living thing. You can walk right through it, but no matter how you touch or push, it keeps flowing, no matter what’s in its way.
2. Massless Amorphous Sculpture
Have you ever seen a sculpture that doesn’t take shape? This massless amorphous sculpture is exactly what its title is. It’s a large body of soap bubbles that drifts in the air, never touching the floor or ceiling. 🫧 It changes form, breaks apart, and comes back together, even if you try to push or move it. It’s like a living, breathing cloud of energy.
3. Forest of Resonating Lamps: One Stroke
This installation focuses on light, hence the lamps. 💡 When you stop near a lamp, it lights up and connects its glow to other lamps, creating a beautiful chain of light all around you. It’s like you’re lighting up a magical path that changes with every step you take!
4. Traces of Life
Step inside and see your glowing footprints light up the space. 👣 Your presence brings the installation to life, and as more people join, you all come together to create one big, moving artwork. It’s the beauty of different people uniting to form a living, breathing world just by being there.
Take note that there are around 50 installations planned! This is just a little peek to keep you on your toes. 🙆🏻♀️
