    Wulong Karst, China

By day three in Chongqing, the heat, the hills and the hot pot tend to blur together. A cool green canyon starts to sound like a great idea, and Chongqing happens to have one about two hours away. Wulong Karst is a UNESCO-listed area of giant stone arches, sinkholes and caves, part of the South China Karst since 2007.
This guide covers how to get there, what tickets cost in USD, and what's worth your time at each stop. Three Natural Bridges is the headliner, and a second day adds Fairy Mountain and Furong Cave. We'll start with the question everyone asks first: how do you get there?

How to get to Wulong Karst from Chongqing

    Longshuixia Scenic Area
Wulong looks close on the map, and it mostly is, but the last leg is what eats your time. The long flight is behind you once you land in Chongqing; Wulong adds just 2.5 to 3 hours door to door.
The simplest DIY route is a high-speed train that leaves Chongqing North Station and reaches Wulong Station in about 1.5 to 2 hours, for ¥60 to ¥120 (roughly $8.50 to $17). Once you reach the station, a local bus to the tourist center adds 30 to 40 minutes and about ¥10 to ¥16 (under $2.50).
Other routes work too. Coaches take 2 to 3 hours but run on an irregular schedule, and a private car takes about 2.5 hours with hotel pickup and no transfers. A Wulong Karst tour from Chongqing is the least hassle: Klook's small-group day tour covers the bridges and Longshuixia Gorge in one day. Check the listing for pickup details.
Can this be a Chongqing day trip? Yes, but it's a long one. You could finish the bridges and gorge by about 4:30 p.m. and still catch a 6:30 p.m. train back. Stay overnight if you want Fairy Mountain and Furong Cave too. Fairy Town, next to the tourist center, is the easiest base.

Klook Tip: Aim for a morning train. Last entry at most sights is around 4:30 p.m. in summer, earlier in winter.

Wulong Karst tickets and costs in USD

Each site in Wulong National Park is ticketed separately, so your budget depends on which sights you pick. These are adult prices for March to October, converted at about ¥7.1 to $1.
    • Three Natural Bridges: ¥125 (about $17.50), shuttle and elevator included
    • Longshuixia Gorge: ¥105 (about $15), shuttle and elevator included
    • Furong Cave: ¥150 (about $21), cableway included
    • Fairy Mountain: ¥50 (about $7), plus ¥25 (about $3.50) for the sightseeing train
    • Train to Wulong: ¥60 to ¥120 ($8.50 to $17) one way
    • Local bus from the station: about ¥10 to ¥16 ($1.50 to $2.25)
Between November and February, the bridges, gorge and cave each drop by ¥15 to ¥30 (about $2 to $4). A DIY day with the bridges, gorge, round-trip train and local buses comes to roughly $50 to $70.

Three Natural Bridges Wulong: the Transformers filming location in China

    Natural Three Bridges in Wulong
If you've ever searched for a Transformers filming location China fans can actually visit, this is it. Scenes from Transformers: Age of Extinction were shot at Three Natural Bridges, where three huge rock arches span a gorge: Tianlong, Qinglong and Heilong. The canyon walls on screen are the real ones.
The route is simpler than it sounds. A 12-minute shuttle ride gets you to the elevator, which drops about 260 feet (80 meters) into the canyon. Then it's a roughly 1.5-mile (2.5 km) walk under all three arches, so allow 2.5 to 3 hours. Save 5 to 10 minutes for the side trail up to the Tianfu Post viewing platform, where the classic photo comes from.
Fog can hide everything at the top, but the view usually clears once you're down in the valley. Holiday weeks are the real downside, with 30 to 60 minute queues for shuttles and elevators. Book your Wulong Karst ticket ahead of time.

Longshuixia Gorge: the "ground crack" next door

Where the bridges feel open and grand, Longshuixia Gorge feels like a crack in the earth. It's dim and mossy, with waterfalls dropping down the walls and calm cyan streams below. Plan on about an hour for the walk, plus roughly 30 minutes of transfers from the bridges.
The honest downside is the effort. Steep cliff steps and low rock overhangs you'll duck under make it a workout, and the mist means you'll finish damp. Bring a raincoat, since it works better than an umbrella here. Tickets are ¥105 (about $15), and you can book Longshuixia Gorge tickets in advance.

Fairy Mountain Chongqing: grassland, mist and snow

Fairy Mountain Chongqing is the easy day, the one for when your legs have had enough stairs. Wide grasslands and a little sightseeing train replace the canyon steps. Summer brings camping and horse riding, and winter turns it into one of the few snow spots near the city.
Fog is the trade-off, especially in autumn and winter, so expect moody mist instead of crystal-clear views. It's also much higher than the canyons, and sleet and near-freezing temperatures are possible in late November.
Entry to Fairy Mountain National Forest Park is ¥50 (about $7), and you can reserve Fairy Mountain tickets ahead. Skip the horse ranch stop if you're short on time, since it's foggier and the trains back are slow to come.

    Furong Cave: the underground stop

Furong Cave is the stop that works in any weather. It's one of China's largest karst caves, about 1.7 miles (2.7 km) long, with colored lighting on the stalactites and stalagmites. The temperature stays a steady 61 to 64°F (16 to 18°C) all year.
Expect damp, slippery stairs and a few spots where you'll use your hands as well as your feet. That makes it a tough call for anyone with mobility issues. Tickets are ¥150 (about $21) with the cableway included, and you should plan on about two hours.

Best time to visit Wulong Karst

    Spectacular karst cliffs of Wulong
Most sights look the same all year, so your season comes down to weather and crowds. May to September is the sweet spot, with scenic areas sitting around 77°F (25°C) while downtown Chongqing hits 95 to 104°F. July and August get busy with school holidays, so June is quieter.
Snow fans should aim for January and February at Fairy Mountain. Skip early May and early October, when public holidays bring traffic jams and long queues. Fog is heaviest in October and November, so September is the safer autumn pick.

Wulong Karst itinerary: one or two days

One day works if you're ready to move early.
    • One day: Catch a morning train out of Chongqing North Station. Spend 2.5 to 3 hours at Three Natural Bridges, then take the shuttle on to Longshuixia Gorge for about an hour. Head back on an early evening train.
    • Two days: Do the same on day one, then sleep in Fairy Town. On day two, spend the morning at Fairy Mountain and about two hours at Furong Cave before heading back.
Tired legs after the bridges? Do the gorge on day two instead. Got another free day in Chongqing? Dazu Baoding Mountain Stone Carvings is another UNESCO day trip, about 40 minutes by high-speed train.
Klook Tip: Wear shoes with real grip. Longshuixia Gorge and Furong Cave are wet and slippery all year.
