A Handy Guide to Luggage Storage in Tokyo—Simplified!
Ever wished you could explore Tokyo or outside of Tokyo without dragging around a heavy suitcase?
Good news—Tokyo makes it super easy with a wide range of luggage storage options. From coin lockers to app-based services, here’s how to travel light and roam free.
My Experience Using Tokyo’s Lockers
When I was in Japan back in May 2025, I stored two large suitcases in a locker before heading from Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko on the Shinkansen.
Since oversized luggage on the Shinkansen requires a reservation, lockers were the perfect option—especially since we also had a stroller to manage.
No worries, though: at major hubs like Tokyo, Shinjuku, and Shibuya Stations—even at airports, shopping malls, and smaller stations like Shimbashi—lockers are widely available and super easy to use.
Where to Find Lockers in Tokyo
Coin lockers are everywhere in Tokyo. You’ll find them at:
- Major train stations like Shinjuku, Tokyo, and Shibuya
- Airports including Narita and Haneda
- Shopping malls, tourist attractions, and even smaller stations
Lockers usually come in small, medium, and large sizes.
- Small: Good for backpacks or shopping bags
- Medium: Fits most carry-ons
- Large: Can hold a 28-inch suitcase (sometimes even two small bags)
💡 Klook Tip: Larger lockers at busy stations tend to fill up fast—check further inside the station for better luck.
How Much Does Luggage Storage in Tokyo Cost?
You can expect to pay around ¥300–¥1,000 per day, depending on the size:
- Small lockers: ~¥300–¥400
- Medium lockers: ~¥500–¥600
- Large lockers: ~¥700–¥900
At Narita and Haneda airports, larger or specialty lockers (like for skis) may cost up to ¥1,000. Still, that’s a small price for the freedom to explore unburdened!
How to Pay (Super Easy!)
@blueminghue Save! how to use coin lockers in Japan? 🇯🇵✌🏻 | korang dah kena check out sebab nak start your day in a place yang jauh from current city. Takkan lah dah keluar awal, pastu nak return balik ke tempat stay korang semata nak alih luggage pukul 11 am tu kan? Mestilah nak kena angkut luggage korang tu sekali masa korang keluar pagi tu… TAPI! tempat stay next untuk malam ni kena check in pukul 3pm lak 😭 Caranya macam ni! Letak je luggage korang kat coin lockers from train station yang senang korang nak access balik nanti. Tapi! Some hostel allow kita untuk letak luggage awal daripada waktu check in. So kena make sure dulu dengan hostel korang tu provide tak? Tapi kalau jauh, better letak kat coin locker je.. malam nanti ambil la sebelum check in kat tempat stay baru tu. 🤗 another tips, please la snap kat mana coin locker tu berada. Sebab yang ni kami letak kat Shibuya, iaitu station yang besar and korang akan sesat nak cari balik coin locker tu 🤣 take note ya! Jangan lupa like, follow and share kat kawan korang tau 🥰💖🇲🇾🤜🏻🤛🏻 PM for editable itinerary & full budget! #coinlocker #japan #travelmurah #budgettravel #AsianTravel #visitjapan #fyp #viral #shibuyasky #shibuya #diytravel ♬ original sound - fleurchérieeee
Forget fumbling with coins—Tokyo’s lockers are modern and easy to use.
- Most accept IC cards (Suica, Pasmo), you can also tap the IC Card on your iPhone!
- Many luggage storage in Tokyo also take credit cards
- Of course, 100 yen coins still work, and change machines are nearby
When you pick up your bag, just tap your IC card again or enter the code on your printed receipt.
Time Limits: Day Use & Multi-Day Lockers
Most lockers are day use only—you’ll need to pick up your bags before midnight. But at busier hubs:
- Tokyo, Shinjuku, and Sapporo Stations: Multi-day lockers available (up to 3 days)
- Narita Airport: Storage up to 8 days
- Haneda Airport: 3–7 days, depending on the terminal
⚠️ Items left too long will be removed and kept at the station office (for a fee). Anything unclaimed for 30 days is usually discarded.
