🏔️ Peak Powder Season (Late December to February)

If you're chasing deep, dry powder, aim for late December through February. Niseko is famous for receiving over 15 metres of snowfall each season, and this is when the snow is at its lightest and fluffiest. January, in particular, is known for almost daily snowfall — ideal for advanced skiers and snowboarders.
The Sapporo and Otaru Snow Festivals also take place mid to late February, so don’t forget to catch those if you go during that time!
Klook Tip: You can find the official website of the Otaru Snow Festival here, and the Sapporo Snow Festival here for more details. ✨

🎿 Quieter Slopes & Better Deals (Early December and March)

Want fewer crowds and more affordable prices? Consider visiting in early December or March. Snow conditions are still great, especially in early March, but lift lines are shorter and accommodation tends to be cheaper.

☀️ Spring Skiing (April to Early May)

For sunny skies, soft snow, and family-friendly vibes, spring skiing in April is a great option. While powder days are rare, it’s a relaxed time to enjoy the mountain — and there are often late-season discounts on lift passes and rentals.

    Getting to Niseko Ski Resort

train going to niseko ski resort
You'll first need to get to Sapporo to reach the ski resorts in Niseko. You’ll most likely fly into New Chitose Airport (CTS), which is the main gateway to Hokkaido. From the airport, you can take the JR Rapid Airport train to Sapporo Station, which takes about 40 minutes. This is the fastest way to get to Sapporo. Trains come roughly every 15 minutes. The JR Hokkaido Pass covers this train ride (as well as the train going to Niseko!), so it’s definitely worth considering for fuss-free transfers.
If you’re planning to explore other popular destinations in Hokkaido, like Otaru or Hakodate, during your trip, the pass is even more useful since you’ll likely take the JR limited express trains to get there! It’s pretty flexible so no need to worry about the pass validity. You can choose from 5, 7, or 10 consecutive-day packages.
Once you're in Sapporo, you can board a JR Hakodate Main Line train to either Kutchan Station or Niseko Station, depending on where your accommodation is. The ride from Sapporo to Kutchan takes about 2 to 2.5 hours while getting to Niseko Station takes around 3 hours. Both stations are close to the major ski resorts, though Kutchan is the primary hub for visitors to the area.
👀 Psst…You get a free 3GB eSim with every purchase of a JR Hokkaido Pass. This is a limited-time offer, so don’t miss out!
From Kutchan or Niseko Station, local buses or taxis are available to take you directly to your hotel or the ski areas. If you’re staying in the Grand Hirafu area, for example, frequent buses run between Kutchan Station and the resort.

Now that we’ve covered transportation, it’s time to figure out accommodation. Since Niseko is a massive area with lots to do and explore, we recommend staying for more than a few nights. To help you decide, we’ve rounded up our 8 favorite places to stay in the Niseko area.

    1) The Westin Rusutsu Resort

    The Westin Rusutsu Resort
The Westin Rusutsu Resort is situated within Hokkaido’s Rusutsu Resort, just near Kutchan Station. You get direct access to the Rusutsu area’s 37 ski trails right outside your door! The hotel has 23 floors, plus spacious guest rooms and suites, so you’re sure to be comfortable.

In addition to skiing, the resort includes amenities like a large onsen (hot spring), a fitness center, and multiple dining options that serve local and international dishes. Make sure to check out the resort’s kaiseki offerings for a unique cultural dining experience. For families, the hotel offers easy access to attractions like the Rusutsu Amusement Park.
Klook Tip: Kaiseki (or kaiseki-ryori) refers to a multi-course traditional Japanese meal. The food is often delicately presented on small bowls and plates, so it’s a visual feast as well! Keep an eye out if your hotel (or any establishment you’re in) serves this since it’s something visitors to Japan should try at least once.

If you’re new to skiing or would love a refresher, consider taking a private lesson from a professional instructor. You can get one-on-one coaching in a class of up to 4 people (or just by yourself!) at some of the most famous slopes in Niseko. All skill levels are welcome.
You can choose between a 3-hour or 7-hour session, and you can opt to be picked up and dropped off directly at your hotel. Talk about convenience!

It’s still conveniently close to nearby attractions like Niseko Village and the other resorts within the Niseko United area, which are accessible by shuttle. This hotel is also famous for its hot spring baths, so if you’ve yet to have an authentic onsen experience – this is your lucky day!
