The Otsuka Museum of Art was larger than I expected, making it a pleasant place to explore at leisure. The best part was being able to see a wide variety of world-renowned artworks all in one place. Although they weren't the original pieces, it still felt very meaningful to be able to see so many works together. Each space had a different atmosphere, which made it enjoyable to look around, and there were many great spots for taking photos. The walking paths are quite long, so comfortable shoes are a must, but it was a wonderful place to spend time slowly browsing.
The moment I stepped into the Otsuka Museum of Art, it felt as if I had entered an art sanctuary transcending time and space. Unlike typical museums that collect original works, this museum uses high-tech ceramic panel technology to precisely reproduce classic paintings and murals from around the world, allowing visitors to admire artistic masterpieces from ancient times to the modern era all in one space. Although I initially harbored some skepticism about "reproductions," after actually visiting, such doubts were quickly replaced by awe and emotion. Of course, reproductions are ultimately different from original works, lacking a certain historical "authenticity" and the warmth of the artist's hand. However, from another perspective, the Otsuka Museum of Art breaks down geographical and temporal barriers, giving more people the opportunity to experience world-renowned paintings, which in itself is an extremely valuable form of cultural promotion. For those who cannot easily travel abroad or delve into major museums, this place is undoubtedly a gateway to the world of art.
This was my first visit. It's recommended to purchase tickets in advance, as it makes entry smoother and slightly cheaper. I was able to join a free one-hour tour with a volunteer guide, which allowed me to enjoy the artworks with great interest. Since I didn't rent an audio guide, I feel that without this tour, I might have just casually glanced through everything. According to the guide, even if you spend only 15 seconds on each artwork, it would still take 4 hours to see everything in the museum, so I think it's best to allow plenty of time. Just seeing the works I recognized from textbooks took a considerable amount of time. There was also an interactive booth where you could experience becoming a painting, which made it a fun experience, unlike a typical quiet museum visit. Choosing souvenirs was also enjoyable, making it a very fulfilling museum experience.
Many restored famous paintings are on display, and the museum is very spacious, so I recommend allowing plenty of time for your visit. On a nice day, you could spend some relaxing time in the garden, or rest at the cafe. Since re-entry is permitted on the same day, it might be a good idea to go out for lunch. The museum doesn't have the typical quietness of an art gallery, so it might be a good option for first-time visitors as it's not too intimidating. There are arrows on the floor, so following them made it easy to navigate and view the exhibits.
It was efficient, easy, and saves money! I bought my ticket to the Otsuka Museum of Art while I was on the high way bus going to where the Museum is located - Kutoshima. And buying through Klook saved me $3 USD ! I did not need to line up at the door and just walked right in holding the QR Code on my phone. I am going to buy other tickets through Klook as well!
I visited the museum at the end of the year with my 4 and 7-year-old children. As expected, it was crowded, but since the Otsuka Museum of Art boasts one of Japan's largest spaces, we were able to enjoy the exhibits comfortably by changing our route when narrow passages were congested. There were photo spots everywhere where you could transform into the main character of a famous painting and take pictures, allowing us to enjoy both art appreciation and cosplay simultaneously. It was truly a valuable experience. The museum is so vast that even my energetic kids slept soundly in the car on the way home, so it was also good exercise. It's a wonderful museum I'd like to visit once a year.
On August 21st, I visited the Otsuka Museum of Art alone for the first time, despite the intense heat. I was able to enter easily without queuing, using a screenshot of the QR code from my Klook ticket. After ascending the long escalator, I rented an audio guide for 500 yen and was immediately moved upon entering the Sistine Chapel, which was my top priority! I separated from the guided groups and listened to the explanations on the audio guide. Following the designated route marked on the floor, I was able to view the exhibits smoothly. The Scrovegni Chapel on B3F was an overwhelming space, and I was so impressed that I wanted to stay and gaze at it forever. For lunch, I had decided on Cafe Giverny on B2F, where I enjoyed a wonderful curry and coffee while admiring Monet's Water Lilies pond. Afterward, I continued through the museum, constantly amazed by the unprecedented scale of the paintings. There were chairs provided in various spots to allow for leisurely appreciation of the artworks, and even opportunities for cosplay-like photo shoots. I thought it was a wonderful museum that could be enjoyed by everyone from children to the elderly. I spent about 4 hours exploring, but I hope to visit again someday to see the rooms I missed.
This museum feels like a condensed collection of paintings and murals from around the world. It's quite impactful, and the atmosphere of each room changes with the artwork, creating a very immersive experience. The 'Last Judgment' right after entering is truly breathtaking. I wished I could have stayed there forever. Even on a weekday, it was quite crowded, so I imagine weekends would be even more so. Even staying from morning until closing isn't enough, so I definitely want to come back. Although the admission fee is high, it's absolutely worth every penny!
