Alpen Takayama Matsumoto Pass Review – My Own Money, My Own Experience I used this pass during my recent trip to Japan, which followed an itinerary of Nagoya → Matsumoto → Alpine Route → Toyama → Takayama → Nagoya. 1. **Fast Delivery of Exchange Voucher.** It was great to receive the pass exchange voucher within two days of ordering. 2. **Easy Exchange for Physical Ticket at Nagoya Station JR Counter.** The process of exchanging the pass at the counter and immediately reserving seats made train travel during the trip much more convenient. 3. **High Utility for a Multi-Region Itinerary.** Since my plan was to travel connecting Matsumoto, the Alpine Route, Toyama, and Takayama, it was convenient not to have to arrange various transportation methods separately. 4. **The Scenery from the Train Was Truly Beautiful.** There were many sections where I traveled while enjoying mountains and natural landscapes, making the journey itself feel like part of the trip. 5. **Excellent Customer Service from Klook.** When a sudden change in plans caused a minor issue during my trip, Klook's customer service responded in real-time, allowing me to resolve it without much difficulty. 6. **I Plan to Go Again.** I was satisfied with this trip and plan to use Klook again when I visit next time. This is a review based on my own purchase and personal experience.
If you're planning to travel from Nagoya city to Takayama, Toyama, and include the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route within five days, I highly recommend purchasing this pass! A round-trip Hida Limited Express ticket from Nagoya city to Takayama alone costs around NT$2400, and the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route ticket also costs about NT$2400. With this pass, I traveled from Nagoya to Takayama on the luxurious Hida Limited Express within five days, stayed for three nights, then went to Toyama for one night. I also used this pass to take the electric railway to Tateyama Station for free, and exchanged it for a free round-trip ticket for the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. Finally, I took the free JR from Shinano-Omachi back to Nagoya city. It's very convenient and highly recommended!Seat reservation process: Each pass includes four free seat reservations. You can select your preferred time and reserve seats using the automatic machines at the station.
Received the tickets 4 days after ordering. Upon arrival at Nagoya Airport, we exchanged them for physical tickets at the JTB counter (exchanged on 5/09, designated for use starting 5/10). After reaching Nagoya Station, we immediately reserved our seats for the designated train at the machine. The entire trip went smoothly, with no issues encountered. Due to cracks in the bridge piers, the Toyama-Takayama section could only be traveled by local train/shuttle bus/local train, which took some time for transfers (limited services, and no designated seats were used; the first leg didn't guarantee a seat, but the second leg did). It's a pity we only had 5 days; if we had an extra 1-2 days, the itinerary could have been more relaxed.
We think it's great value for money! We went to Tateyama Kurobe three times in a row. On the first day, we went from Toyama up to Toyama (staying at a Toyama hotel), taking the earliest train from Toyama Station at 05:50. When you get to the Tateyama Station customer service center, you can book your cable car tickets for the day. You can tell them you'll be using it for three days and two nights, and the ticket from Tateyama Station to Ogizawa will be a five-day pass. The cable car at Tateyama Station is for same-day use. On the second day, if you're going up from Toyama again, you'll need to go to the Tateyama Station customer service center again to book your cable car tickets for the day. Of course, you'll already have your pass and the ticket from Tateyama to Ogizawa from the previous day to proceed to the next part. My husband was very happy. We witnessed Tateyama Kurobe in cloudy, rainy, and sunny weather. We stayed one night in Murodo (two days and one night), saw the stars at night, and watched the sunrise and sunset. We even saw a pair of ptarmigans. P.S.: The snow wall in Murodo only opens at 9:30 AM daily. However, the exhibition platform at the exit towards Tateyama Hotel is already open before 9:30 AM. Because we were on a quick trip, we couldn't use their Shinkansen tickets. As soon as we arrived at Nagoya Airport, we went to Meitetsu Station to exchange for our pass. Then, we took an overnight bus at our own expense directly from Nagoya to Toyama. We also took the Shinkansen at our own expense directly from Matsumoto to Tokyo. The pass itself is very comprehensive; you can go from Nagoya to Takayama, then to Toyama, then down to Matsumoto, and back to Nagoya. However, we had already been to Takayama before, so this time we used the pass to go directly to Tateyama Kurobe and made the most of it (haha).
This is absolutely a great pass if you planned your itinerary wisely. Unfortunately, I made one minor mistake. I did not know that you could not exchange the JR Pass at Toyama Station. You can only do it at Takayama Station, Nagoya Station, and probably at Shinano Station (not sure about that). The best starting point to exchange the JR Pass is probably at Nagoya Station. But the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route pass (which is included in this pass) needs to be acquired from either Dentetsu Toyama Station or from Shinano Station. I got mine at Dentetsu Toyama Station.
For this trip, we intended to use the pass to visit the Kurobe Alpine snow wall, and it was very convenient to use. We just presented the pass to exchange it for an Alpine Route ticket at Ogizawa Station, and for the bus from Shinano Omachi to Ogizawa, we only needed to show the pass. Exchanging JR train tickets was also as convenient as with other passes.
It's great that you can exchange tickets at Nagoya Airport, saving a lot of time. After getting the physical ticket, you can use it at a JR self-service machine to redeem reserved seat tickets. Only 4 reserved seats can be exchanged. For Tateyama Kurobe, you can exchange your Tateyama cable car tickets at Kintetsu Toyama Station on the same day. All tickets for ascending and descending the mountain are included.
The JR Alpine–Takayama–Matsumoto Area Tourist Pass was one of the best investments for our Japan trip. It offered excellent value for money and made traveling around Central Japan extremely convenient and hassle-free. We used the pass to visit beautiful destinations such as Takayama, Toyama, and the spectacular Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. The transportation system was efficient, punctual, and easy to navigate. The highlight of our trip was definitely the Snow Wall (Yuki-no-Otani) at Murodo — truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience! The pass covered multiple modes of transport, including trains, buses, cable cars, and ropeways along the Alpine Route, allowing us to enjoy breathtaking mountain scenery without worrying about buying separate tickets. If you're planning to explore the Japanese Alps, Shirakawa-go, Takayama, or the Alpine Route, this pass is highly recommended. It saved us both time and money while making our family trip smooth and memorable.
This is a great and practical ticket. It allows for 4 free seat reservations and includes the entire Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route itinerary. However, this ticket cannot be exchanged at JR ticket machines; it must be exchanged at a ticket counter. My flight delay almost made me miss it.
