Our recent road trip from Queenstown to Christchurch was nothing short of spectacular. This journey is a masterclass in NZ’s natural beauty, offering landscapes that feel pulled straight from a movie set. Leaving Queenstown, the drive through the tussock-clad Lindis Pass is hauntingly beautiful. We made a quick stop in Omarama—before the scenery shifted into the dramatic Mackenzie Country. Lake Pukaki & Mt Cook: Nothing prepares you for the first glimpse of Lake Pukaki. The water is an impossibly bright, milky turquoise. Following the shoreline toward Aoraki/Mt Cook was the highlight; seeing the snow-capped peak of NZ highest mountain reflected in the water is a memory I’ll keep forever. Lake Tekapo: A stop at the iconic Church of the Good Shepherd is essential. The contrast of the stone chapel against the vibrant blue lake is stunning. The final stretch through the Canterbury Plains into Christchurch offered a peaceful transition from the rugged alps to the "Garden City."
The value for money is excellent, and it was incredibly fun. The scenery along the way was breathtaking, as if we had stepped into the world of The Lord of the Rings. Our two guides were also very enthusiastic and attentive. It would be even better if the vehicle could be upgraded.
A full-day road trip! But I wasn't bored at all! You can fully experience the magnificent nature of New Zealand's South Island. Since you can stop at various spots, I think it's a pretty good value tour. I'm Japanese and participated alone. I was worried about whether I'd be able to understand the meeting times and such, as my English isn't fluent, but the driver kindly explained things in easy-to-understand English separately, and I was able to relax and enjoy myself! Thank you so much. During the road trip, they also explained a lot about NZ. If I had understood English better... I think I would have enjoyed it even more (lol). There were bottled water and snacks in the car, which we could have for free. This was a great help, as we did a lot of walking during trekking along the way.
The staff are friendly. The tour is outsourced to Cheeky Kiwi Travel. If you are staying at a popular location, different Cheeky Kiwi Travel vehicles might arrive in the morning to pick up passengers, so make sure you get on the correct one. The journey is long, and the natural scenery of the South Island is beautiful. As everything is outdoors and the hiking trails have high UV levels, remember to apply sunscreen and wear a hat.
What I really appreciated about this tour was that it uniquely offers many sightseeing spots while including a fuss-free transfer from Queenstown to Christchurch. There is also the option to trek at Mt Cook or visit the cafe for a nice lunch. However, the journey was quite uncomfortable because the 15-seater van was fully packed - and I was certainly too close for comfort to an uncle in the single seat who kept popping to his left and right to take photos ;_; Worst of all, when we reached Lake Tekapo & Church of the Good Shepherd, we only had FIFTEEN MINUTES. During which, I had to use the toilet, and there was ONE functioning toilet, and an extremely long line T_T I spent all 15 minutes queuing for the toilet, and didn’t even make it across the bridge to see the Church up close. So my memory of Lake Tekapo will, unfortunately, just be of queuing for the one toilet cubicle. Maybe in future I’ll just fly and then book a day trip instead…
Great itinerary. The service was on time and the transition from queenstown service to christchurch was smooth. Considering the distance and overall tour I’d say its worth it
Kristina - our tour guide from Queenstown to Mt. Cook. She was lovely and her knowledge of the area along the way to Mt. Cook is superb (I loved the story of the Sheep 🐑). I learned a lot ☺️. Clive - tour guide from Mt. Cook to Christchurch. He was a great guide too 😄
The driver was very punctual in picking us up. He helped us with our luggage. He is very knowledgeable about the history of Queenstown and nearby cities. He talked a lot until I fell asleep… He dropped us off at some scenic spots and discussed with us the transfer we needed for Mount Cook. The next driver was also very diligent in sharing stories along our way.
Driver and tour guide Collin and Carl are very professional and caring. They told us everything about NZ and you will never be bored during the long trip. The timing is perfect and we have a detailed visit in Mount Cook and Lake Tekapo. The 1 hour hiking in Mount Cook is perfect for beginners. It is very good when you need to travel from Queenstown to Christchurch. Though the van was broken in Lake Tekapo, Carl treated us a meal and let us have more time to visit the Lake Tekapo. Will certainly recommend to everyone to join the tour.
Driver and tour guide Collin and Carl are very professional and humor. They knew the best of New Zealand and told us the culture and history of NZ in details. The itinerary is perfect, just got enough time for everything. The glazier hiking in Mount Cook took around an hour which is best for beginners like us. Though the van was broken in Lake Tekapo, tour guide treat us a meal during waiting which was very considerate and let us have more time to have a better look on Lake Tekapo. Will definitely recommend to join this tour.
