Milford Sound-cruise

Although we didn't catch the spectacular sight of a thousand waterfalls in full flow, it was still a very worthwhile trip — at least four or five waterfalls are "open for business" year-round. Along the way, we also stopped at several scenic spots, and the bus driver was quite witty and humorous, giving us introductions to the various activities available. Highly recommended.

We thought the road trip already had amazing reviews but it wasn’t until we went on the cruise we knew there is a much better view on the ocean! There are many different cruise companies and the Pure Milford boat is definitely the better looking boat out of the lot! So we were happy with that. Tip - best seats are at the lower deck and at the front of the boat! Also loved the commentary during the cruise and also get complimentary tea, coffee, hot choco etc. Milford rains about 250 days in a year and we were very lucky to get a sunny day. So definitely bring a warm jacket, sunnies, beanie and maybe a raincoat. Thank you again for the amazing cruise!

Exploring Milford Sound with Southern Discoveries was truly one of the most unforgettable highlights of the trip. The entire experience felt seamless—from the moment we checked in to the breathtaking cruise through the fjord. Their staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about the place, sharing stories and facts that made the journey even more meaningful. The vessel was comfortable with plenty of viewing spots, and the panoramic windows made it easy to take in the dramatic cliffs, lush rainforests, and cascading waterfalls. Getting up close to Stirling and Bowen Falls was a surreal moment—you can literally feel the spray of glacial water as the boat gently moves in.

The captain has very insightful explanation of all the fiords and how the waterfalls are form. We experienced more than once the “facial” water spray on our faces from the waterfalls and it’s really beautiful and fun for the kids. The boat size is small with loads of Chocolate chip cookies and hot tea available, this make the trip more enjoyable and very customised since the beauty of Milford sound is always subjected to weather changes. The boat is very well maintained and clean.

The view is marvellous and stunning from far and near. The cruise guide is well informative. it's clean and comfortable.

It was a really nice experience and the guide is really friendly, knowledgeable, and humorous :) The bus transportation was on time, we weren’t rushed at every landmark, and we took lots of pictures!

En to timer lang båttur i Milford Sound er virkelig avhengig av flaks. Før avreise var jeg egentlig litt engstelig, for stedet er kjent for mye regn, med over to hundre regndager i året. Å oppleve solskinn er derfor ikke en selvfølge. Da båten sakte seilte ut fra kaien og jeg så solen bryte gjennom skyene, med blå himmel og fjell som dukket opp samtidig, kunne jeg ikke la være å tenke: «Takk, Gud, for velsignelsen.» Hele turen varte omtrent to timer, men hvert minutt føltes som å se en live naturdokumentar. Det dypblå og smaragdgrønne vannet glitret i solskinnet; de høye klippene på begge sider stupte rett ned i havet, og fjellkjedene strakte seg ut i det fjerne. Da båten sakte nærmet seg fossene, spredte vanntåken seg i sollyset, som om et fint slør av lys ble drysset over oss. Sjokket var ikke bare på grunn av det storslåtte, men en følelse av litenhet og ærefrykt over å være omgitt av naturen. De mest ikoniske fjelltoppene fremsto ekstra tredimensjonale mot den blå himmelen, og skyene beveget seg langs fjellsidene – et bilde så vakkert at det nesten virket uvirkelig. New Zealands flagg vaiet i vinden akterut, og bølgene på havet sto i kontrast til fjellandskapet i det fjerne. I det øyeblikket blir man virkelig stille og kjenner på kraften i dette landet. Mange sier at Milford Sound har flere og mer spektakulære fosser på regnværsdager; men å se en så klar utsikt og tydelige fjellinjer i godt vær er faktisk like sjeldent. Denne turen fikk meg til å innse at en tur til Milford Sound virkelig krever litt flaks. Og når det gode været dukker opp, forsterkes følelsen uendelig. Den to timer lange turen var raskt over, men den blå himmelen, den fossen og det fjellet vil forbli i minnet lenge. Takk til været som ga oss et perfekt vindu, og gjorde denne fjordturen til det reneste og mest imponerende øyeblikket på hele reisen.
