Technology runs, time flows. Daito Manabe's solo exhibition "Relational Tense" reshapes the rhythm between the body and machines regarding perception, memory, and response, inviting people to step into the fluid temporality of the post-AI era and experience what emerges and what fades away.

Exhibition Introduction

This exhibition combines large-scale immersive installations with architectural space, bodily perception, real-time computing, image, and sound systems to construct a continuously evolving perceptual environment. The artwork transforms the audience's movement, duration of stay, and interactive states into crucial variables for generating sound and imagery, enabling viewers to transcend the role of mere observers and become key participants influencing the development of the work.

Through computational generation and data response mechanisms, the work breaks through the framework of traditional visual displays, transforming generated images and sounds into spatial and temporal perceptual experiences, thereby making the architectural space an integral part of the expansion and transformation of the artwork. The body, machine, environment, and music respond to one another within the same system, forming a field that continuously generates over time, space, and interactive relationships.

This exhibition continues Daito Manabe's long-term research into life, intelligence, and computational systems, exploring how humans, artificial life, and AI agents form new relationships through interaction, adaptation, and memory. In an era where machines can rapidly simulate multiple possibilities, the exhibition departs from differences in temporal scales to contemplate how relationships generate their own temporal forms, proposing a mode of generation that transcends mere simulation: how life and systems gradually take shape amidst continuous response and change.

Artist Introduction

Daito Manabe | Artist, Programmer, Composer Daito Manabe is an artist, programmer, and composer whose work explores how life, intelligence, and society emerge and evolve through music, computation, and audiovisual media. After founding Rhizomatiks in 2006, he developed interdisciplinary works combining programming, music, visual art, and performance. His early research focused on the feedback relationship between the human body and machines, transforming motion, muscle activity, and physiological signals into sound and images. Subsequently, he further expanded his creative practice to neural networks, brain organoids, and spiking neural networks, treating biological activity itself as a generative medium. In recent years, his research has focused on social systems composed of humans, artificial life, and AI agents, investigating how processes such as adaptation, cooperation, and emergence within these systems become new methods for generating music and moving images. In addition to his research and creative work, he continues to develop large-scale performances, exhibitions, and public art projects. He contributed to the technology development, visual systems, and lighting system design for the Tokyo Handover Ceremony at the Closing Ceremony of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, and has collaborated across disciplines with artists such as Perfume, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Björk, Nosaj Thing, and Squarepusher, continuously exploring new forms of creation intertwined with technology, art, and performance.
