Such an amazing experience and honestly my personal highlight of our Japan trip. Make a reservation in advance as they get quite busy, but everyone was very efficient and kind. I wish I had asked for everyone's names so I could thank them individually. They have a beautiful selection of women and men's kimonos - the act of choosing one was so much fun, I definitely think it's worth it to upgrade to the lace kimonos and accessories if you can. For the gals, they gave you several choices for a lovely hairstyle-- and they did such a good job on me and my sisters, and the hairstyles held up all day! They even offer you super cute accessories that include bags, parasols and even a katana to keep some of your belongings while you go and about in your kimonos. Highly recommend booking a photographer. We had Steven, who spoke English, and made the experience so special. He took us to a beautiful temple and gave great direction and fun ideas for the photos! 10/10 would do again!

Was a very nice experience. The staff were very friendly and also made an effort to make sure everyone had a mini pig to pet.

Incredible experience, Sensai provided great guidance whilst we created our pottery. Location is easy to find and prices are great value for money. Appreciate they offered to take plenty of photos for us too. Highly recommend this experience, it was a highlight of our trip, we would do it again in a heartbeat.

Kimono rentals are always a must, and this studio definitely delivered! They were friendly and gentle when assisting with dressage and hair, and their kimono selection is beautiful. Just be careful of which location you booked! I didn’t realize I booked to go to a different one, but since it’s the same owner, they still serviced me flawlessly.

Wonderful experience - very considerate and warm! We had booked women's, men's, and children's kimonos. It was quite crowded and a bit chaotic at pickup. Since I'm on the autism spectrum and quickly feel uncomfortable in such situations, I wrote a message in advance. The team responded immediately and accompanied us to a quieter store nearby. The staff member was incredibly friendly, patient, and understanding. The kimonos were beautiful and high quality - we felt very comfortable and special all day long. A truly great and empathetic experience that I can recommend to anyone!

Purchased Kyoto City Subway + Bus One-Day Pass through Klook at a discounted price. Simply exchange it for a physical ticket at the airport. After the first use on the day, the date will be automatically printed, and you can use it unlimited times on that day. Very convenient.

Shin our guide was really great, had a great amount of information on the area and local shrines and temples. it was a good pace, plenty of time to ask questions and the crowds weren’t too bad. Shin contacted me the day before, and on the day to set up our meeting, everything was just easy.

Cultural Significance

The Gion Matsuri is a festival with deep historical roots, dating back to 869 AD. Originally held to appease the gods during an epidemic, it has evolved into a grand celebration of Kyoto's rich heritage. The festival features the iconic Yama-Hoko floats, each with its own historical and mythological significance, and includes the selection of a local boy as a divine messenger. This event is a testament to the enduring spirit and traditions of the local community, showcasing traditional costumes, historical reenactments, and rituals passed down through generations.

Historical Landmarks

The Gion Matsuri is closely tied to the Yasaka Shrine, a significant historical landmark where the procession of mikoshi, or portable shrines, begins and ends. The shrine is believed to house the spirit of the sea god Susano-o, highlighting the festival's role in preserving Kyoto's rich cultural and religious heritage. While the main events occur outside the Gion district, the connection to Yasaka Jinja Shrine underscores the festival's deep roots in the city's history.
