Begin your experience by meeting a friendly local guide who introduces the history and meaning of “Japan Blue,” the iconic indigo color cherished since the Edo period. Receive your own tenugui cloth and select from various shibori techniques to design your dyeing pattern, using sample works and silk-screen motifs for inspiration. After folding and tying your cloth, dip it into the indigo vat and watch it transform from green to deep blue as it oxidizes. Rinse and reveal your unique pattern. Once dried and ironed, choose Japanese-inspired motifs such as Mount Fuji or ukiyo-e characters to silk-screen onto your cloth. After final ironing, your original Japanese hanging scroll is complete.
