Meet your guide outside Exit 1 of Nijōjō-mae Station and discover a castle designed not for battle, but for power and prestige. Learn how the Tokugawa shoguns ruled Japan from Edo (modern-day Tokyo) while asserting authority beside the Emperor’s residence in Kyoto.
Walk through Ninomaru Palace, where architecture reveals strict social hierarchy. Listen to the famous nightingale floors and stand in the historic room where, in 1867, Tokugawa Yoshinobu returned power to the Emperor, marking the end of the shogunate.

Reviews
Our tour of Nijo Castle with Naoya was an incredible experience. He was very professional, spoke excellent English, and explained the history of the site in a way that was both clear and engaging. The location itself is breathtaking, and having such a knowledgeable guide made it even more special. Overall, it was a fantastic experience and truly great value for money. Highly recommended!
Did an excellent job providing historical information about the castle and it’s accessories. Very welcoming and gave my group time to make it to the meeting location. loved every minute of it.
it was just our own group so we were able to go through the tour easily, Naoya-san had some great tidbits of facts regarding Nijo castle.
Perfect tour guided by Wajad who was very well prepared on the story and events of the pal . Nice to know the history of Japan and its emperors and samurai. just keep in mind that the location you receive by mail takes you to gate 2, which is wrong , you have to search for gate n 1 exit , just on front of the palace
Great tour with Dan. Love his straightforward explanation of the sites within the castle. As much as I enjoy the fluff of myth and legend, it was nice to hear the actual reasoning behind the traditions and symbolisms. Also provided great recommendations for food after the tour.
Naoya was an amazing guide at Nijo Castle! He took the time to explain all the details at the perfect pace, and his great English made everything so easy to follow and appreciate. Thanks to him, we enjoyed and understood the castle so much more. Highly recommend!
Benjamin was a fantastic guide for our experience of the Nijo castle. Benjamin shared the rich history of the nijo castle and gave us plenty of recommendations for onsens, bars, and shrines to explore while in kyoto. We would highly recommend for any visitors to book this tour!
It was a very pleasant and interesting tour experience. Tomoya was very knowledgeable and really nice.
Tour guide: Naoya gave us a very detailed introduction, including the historical background of the shogunate era and the story of the Tokugawa shoguns. It was a very interesting and wonderful experience!
tour guide was very nice and knew a lot about the castle. we felt like we learned a lot more with our guide than we would have learned by walking around alone.
