If you’re a Malaysian planning your next Japan trip, this guide will help you avoid surprises and still make the most of your holiday!

What is Dual Pricing System?
Starting July 2025, Japan will roll out a dual pricing system at selected attractions across the country.
What does that mean? In short: foreign tourists (yes, including us Malaysians) might pay a bit more than local residents when visiting places like shrines, temples, ski resorts, and even a new nature-themed park in Okinawa.
It’s all part of Japan’s plan to keep tourism sustainable, protect their iconic sites, and manage the growing crowds. Think of it as a way to help preserve the beauty of Japan—for both locals and future travelers to enjoy.
Planning your trip soon? Don’t worry—we’ll guide you through what to expect and how to make the most of your adventure!
Some Attractions in Japan Will Have Higher Fees for Tourists
With Japan dual pricing system kicking off in July 2025, a few popular spots are set to introduce different rates for locals and foreign visitors. Here's a quick look:
Attractions | Foreign Tourists (¥) | Japanese Residents (¥) |
|---|---|---|
8,800/day | 6,930/day | |
6,600/day | 5,000/day | |
Shrines & Temples (in discussion) | 1,000 | 500 |
This kind of pricing system isn’t new. Countries like Thailand, India, and Indonesia already do it at parks and heritage sites.
Japan's approach includes a smart twist—encouraging travelers to explore underrated areas like Hokuriku and beyond, helping to ease pressure on popular cities like Tokyo and Kyoto.
JR East Will Raise the Price for Train Fares
Heads up if you're planning a Japan trip soon! Starting March, train fares in Tokyo including the popular Yamanote Line that connects spots like Shibuya, Shinjuku & Tokyo Station will go up slightly.
- Ticket fares will increase by 10 yen (for short distances like 1–3km)
- IC card users can expect a bump of around 8–9 yen
Just something to keep in mind while planning your 2025/2026 Japan adventure — transport costs might go up, so it's a good idea to book early and budget smart! We put few options below.
