What kind of “chemical reaction” would occur if Pokémon and traditional crafts met head-on? Driven by this question, 20 craft artists representing contemporary Japan, ranging from Living National Treasures to new-generation creators, have passionately taken on this creative challenge. At first glance, Pokémon and crafts might seem like an unexpected combination, but the two actually share many commonalities. Just imagine the raw materials and creation processes used in crafts—earth, grass, metal, along with elements like water, fire, and electricity—which happen to echo the various “types” of Pokémon. The concepts of continuously honing skills, nurturing growth, as well as collecting and trading, also deeply resonate with the passion poured into their work by craft creators and enthusiasts alike. In the exhibition, you can see creations that capture the forms, movements, and even the unique presence of Pokémon within the artwork; there are also pieces inspired by gaming memories such as “Evolution,” “Communication,” the stages of the journey, and “Move” performances. In addition, Pokémon are integrated into everyday utensils that adorn daily life, as well as elegant attire such as kimonos and obi留 (obi clips). What kind of feelings will an encounter with these works ultimately bring? Will it be excitement, enchantment, a knowing smile, or an involuntary thrill? To create these pieces, the artists delved deep into the world of Pokémon—actually playing the games, carefully studying the Pokédex, closely observing the personality and traits of each Pokémon, and then sublimating the feelings and new discoveries gained from the experience into their own unique craft expressions. Skills passed down across generations are meeting contemporary creativity to welcome a brand-new evolution; through the hands of craft artists, Pokémon also reveal unprecedented appearances. This exhibition is not simply a combination of Pokémon and Japanese crafts, but a creative space where tradition and contemporaneity, skill and imagination resonate with one another to create unknown forms of expression. Using familiar Pokémon as an entryway, you are invited to rediscover the profound and charming appeal of Japanese crafts.
