Planning a trip to Japan is exciting, but sorting out your mobile data, not so much. The good news? You don't have to fumble around looking for a SIM card at the airport or rack up roaming charges just to pull up Google Maps. An eSIM for Japan sorts all of that before you even board the plane.
This guide covers everything UK travellers need to know: what an eSIM actually is, why it beats roaming, how to pick the right plan, and exactly what to do when you land. Think of this guide as your "land and go" data setup sorted in advance!

Japan has a cheat code; it's called Klook! 🧡

Japan can feel like a lot to figure out. But every game has a cheat code, and Japan's is Klook.
This June, we're teaming up with Family Fizz for a real family trip to Japan, and there are three ways to play:
  1. Pre-booked and locked in: Some parts of their itinerary are already sorted, so you can see exactly how easy it is to plan Japan with Klook
  2. Chosen on the day: The Family Fizz kids pick between activities in real time and book straight through Klook, just like you would on your own trip
  3. Voted by you: Follow along on Family Fizz's Instagram page, vote on where they head next (see Mount Fuji or go on a tea ceremony in Kyoto?), and watch your pick come to life!
Every experience on their trip is bookable straight through Klook, so you can follow along and plan your own Japan adventure at the same time. Their trip, your rules.
Going live on 25 June 2026. Press start! 🕹️

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM card built directly into your phone. Instead of relying on international roaming from your UK mobile provider (which can quickly get expensive!), you can download an eSIM Japan plan before your trip and activate it when you land.
Your UK number can stay active while your eSIM handles your data in Japan. As long as your phone supports eSIM (most smartphones released after 2019 do), you’ll be able to get online as soon as you arrive.
💡Klook Tip: Before buying, check if your phone supports eSIM (iPhone XS or later, Google Pixel 3a+, and most newer Samsung Galaxy models). Also make sure your phone is unlocked, as UK network-locked devices may not work with eSIMs.

Why not just use roaming?

Most UK travellers just switch roaming on as soon as they land. It’s quick, familiar, and feels like the easiest option. But for a trip to Japan, especially if you’re staying a while, it can end up costing a lot more than you’d expect.
Here's the reality:
  • Daily roaming charges add up fast: Some UK networks charge around £5–£10 per day just to activate roaming. For a 7-day trip, roaming passes can easily add another £50–£100 to your travel costs.
  • Data caps are restrictive: A roaming allowance that feels fine at home can disappear quickly when you're using Google Maps all day, posting photos, and navigating train connections.
  • You end up paying more for less: Plans start from around £2 per day with a Japan eSIM, which is significantly cheaper than most UK roaming rates for the same amount of data.

There are a few things to consider when choosing the right eSIM plan for your trip — mainly your trip length, data needs, and price.

Trip duration

Trip duration is the first thing to think about when choosing an eSIM. If you’re off to Japan for a week, a 7-day plan is the obvious choice. For longer trips of two or three weeks, it’s usually better to go for a 30-day plan instead of stacking shorter ones.
Klook’s eSIM plans come in a range of validity options, from 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 10, 15, and 30 days, so you can easily pick one that matches your travel dates without paying for more than you need.

Data needs

Data needs are where most people underestimate themselves. Here's a rough guide:
  • 500MB per day: enough for messaging apps and occasional map searches
  • 1GB–2GB per day: good for regular social media, navigation, and uploading a few photos
  • 3GB–5GB per day: better if you’re posting content, watching videos, or using a hotspot
  • Unlimited data: no need to think about limits, ideal if you’re a heavy data user

Price

Klook’s 7-day unlimited Japan eSIM costs around £17, while a UK network roaming pass can cost £50+ for the same trip. That’s nearly 3x more expensive,  and if you’re travelling as a family with multiple devices, the savings add up fast!
Here’s an overview of the Japan eSIM prices Klook offers:

Plan

Price

1 GB total, 7 days

~£1.99

5 GB total, 30 days

~£7.29

1 GB per day, 7 days

~£6.85

3 GB per day, 10 days

~£18.15

Unlimited per day, 15 days

~£17.05

For most UK travellers on a one to two week trip, a 1GB to 3GB per day plan hits the sweet spot between cost and convenience. If you're on a longer holiday or planning to share a hotspot with travel companions, unlimited data is well worth the extra spend.

How to install and activate your Japan eSIM

Once you've booked your eSIM, setup takes just a few minutes. Here's how it works:
1. Find your order: Go to "My Orders" in the Klook app after purchasing.

2. Install before you fly: Scan the QR code provided in your booking details to install the eSIM profile on your phone. You can also activate directly through the Klook app if your device supports it.

3. Activate on arrival: When you land in Japan, go to your phone settings and switch to your eSIM. The plan only starts running once you connect to the local Japanese network.
💡Klook Tip: Your eSIM validity runs on a 24-hour basis from the moment you connect. So if you activate it at 9PM on 1 October, a 3-day plan will run through until 9PM on 4 October. Try to activate it when you actually need it (not hours before) to get the most out of your plan!

What else should you book before you land in Japan?

Sorting your eSIM is a great first step, but there are a few other things worth locking in before you fly:

Japan airport transfers

You've got your data, and you've landed, but now you need to actually get to your hotel. Japan's major airports are well-connected, but navigating public transport with luggage after a long-haul flight from the UK isn't always the most relaxing start to a trip.
Booking a private Tokyo airport transfer in advance means you'll have a driver waiting for you, no map-reading required. If you want to save a little, you can book a Keisei Skyliner Narita Airport Express that will take you to major train stations near your hotel!

JR Pass

If you’re planning to travel between cities, a JR Pass can be worth booking for unlimited travel on most shinkansen and JR trains. Just remember it’s a paper ticket sent in advance, so it’s best to order it at least 1–2 weeks before your trip to allow time for delivery.

Theme park tickets: USJ and Tokyo Disneyland

Japan's two big theme parks like Universal Studios Japan (USJ) in Osaka and Tokyo Disneyland sell out on popular travel dates, especially during school holidays and cherry blossom season. Leaving ticket-buying until you arrive is a risk that isn't worth taking.
Book your Universal Studios Japan in advance to guarantee entry, and consider adding an Express Pass if you want to skip the main queues for the most popular rides. For Tokyo, grab your Tokyo Disneyland ahead of time too; the resort operates on a date-specific ticketing system, so you'll need to choose your day when you book!

FAQs about eSIM Japan

Which eSIM is best for Japan?

The best eSIM depends on your trip length and data usage. For most UK travellers on a 1–2 week trip, 1GB–3GB per day is usually enough for maps, messaging, and social media. If you use a lot of data or want peace of mind, unlimited is the safest choice. Klook offers a range of plans to suit different travel styles.

Is it worth getting an eSIM for Japan?

Yes, for UK travellers it’s absolutely worth it. You’ll rely on data for maps, trains, translation, and food spots, so staying connected is essential. An eSIM gives you instant access as soon as you land, usually at a lower cost than UK roaming. It also saves you the hassle of sorting SIM cards on arrival.

Which SIM card is best for tourists in Japan?

Tourists can choose between an eSIM, physical SIM, or pocket WiFi. For most travellers, an eSIM is the easiest option: no pick-up, no returns, and quick setup before you fly. Physical SIMs work too, but you’ll need to buy one after landing before getting online.

How much does an eSIM cost in Japan?

Prices start from around £1.99 for short or low-data plans, and go up to about £17–£18 for longer unlimited options. Most mid-range plans work out at roughly £2–£3 per day. It’s generally much cheaper than UK roaming charges.

Why use an eSIM over a physical SIM in Japan?

It’s mainly about convenience and speed. You set it up before you travel and connect instantly when you land. There’s no airport queue, no SIM swapping, and no stress finding a store. Plus, you can keep your UK number active while using data on your eSIM.
