The driver was very polite and clearly explained the itinerary and timings. We didn't have to meet at a designated spot; instead, a minivan picked us up directly from our hotel. Our group had 8 people, which was a perfect size for the minivan. We had enough time at Fox Village, and lunch was on our own. The afternoon at Ginzan Onsen also provided ample time.

The tour guide was friendly and responsible, and the itinerary was rich and varied. We didn't have to worry about transportation, and lunch and cable car tickets were included. We were lucky that the weather at Zao Okama was clear on the day of our visit, making it well worth the trip!

The driver was very responsible and drove smoothly. The tour guide was also very kind. That day, we first went to Zao Okama, but unfortunately, the weather was bad, so we couldn't see it. The tour guide kept reassuring us. Later, the weather cleared up at the Zao Ropeway Station. In the afternoon, we went to Ginzan Onsen, and the weather was also very good. The tour guide at Ginzan Onsen explained everything very thoroughly and carefully, which made the experience even more meaningful for us.

The timing was perfect, and we had plenty of time at each attraction. I was pleasantly surprised that the tour even included lunch and cable car tickets! The lunch was delicious and not just a quick bite. Our tour guide was very friendly. Overall, I'm very satisfied!

The day before, I received a notification that the tour was canceled, but they immediately offered an alternative. We switched to a group going to Yamadera Temple, Tendo Roadside Station, and Ginzan Onsen. The driver was very kind; he would give a brief explanation at each attraction, then allow us free time, and set a meeting time. It was convenient and offered a lot of freedom, and the roadside station was great for browsing and shopping!

Our driver, Mr. Lee, was very responsible. The day before our trip, he proactively contacted us to provide meeting information. The itinerary for the day was also very smooth. At each attraction, he provided introductions and allowed flexible time for us to explore. When he learned that the noodle shop we planned for lunch was closed, he immediately adapted and took us to eat lunch near Tendo Onsen, also allowing time for everyone to browse the shops. It was fantastic! ❤️ Transportation to Fox Village and Ginzan Onsen can be inconvenient, so having a package tour like this is truly perfect for independent travelers!! 👍🏻

Had a great experience overall! The tour was conducted in Chinese/Japanese (and I know this prior joining lol), but the guide, Fang Chi, was incredibly kind and patient. She made the effort to communicate with me through Google Translate, which I really appreciated and made me feel included throughout the trip. The whole group was well taken care of, and the ride was very comfortable. The locations were quite far from each other, so we spent less than 2 hours at each stop, but it was still enough time to enjoy the sights and experience the places, especially if you’re short on time and want to see multiple spots in one day. Would definitely recommend for travelers who want a convenient and hassle-free way to explore.

The hotel transfer was super convenient, in a comfortable 9-seater vehicle. Our guide, Mr. Li Mengyang, also served as the driver. He was a very smooth and polite driver. When I couldn't find the shuttle bus at Ginzan Onsen, I immediately messaged him on WhatsApp, and he did his best to resolve the issue. He was very serious and responsible. For attractions like Fox Village, it's definitely more convenient to go with a tour.

Things to Do in Ginzan Onsen, Yamagata, Japan

1. Take a Dip in a Traditional Ginzan Onsen Ryokan

Nothing feels more relaxing than soaking in a hot spring bath after a long chilly day!  At Ginzan Onsen, traditional ryokans (Japanese inns) offer both public and private baths decorated with beautiful wooden interiors and peaceful views of nature. Many inns also serve delicious local meals as part of the stay.

2. Walk Along the Historic Streets

You'll feel like you've stepped back in time when you walk along the charming streets of Ginzan Onsen. The town is lined with beautifully preserved wooden buildings, gas street lamps, and old-fashioned bridges. At night, the whole area lights up with a magical glow, making it perfect for a peaceful evening walk.

3. Try Local Treats at Small Shops and Cafés

While exploring Ginzan Onsen, make sure to stop by the local shops and cafés for tasty regional snacks, like warm steamed buns and fresh dango. Many shops are run by friendly locals who love to share their specialties.

4. Visit the Shirogane Waterfall

Just a 4-minute walk from the town center of Ginzan Onsen, the Shirogane Waterfall is a peaceful nature spot you can easily reach. Surrounded by trees and mossy rocks, the falls are especially beautiful in the winter and fall. The path there is an easy walk, so it's perfect for all ages.

5. Wear a Yukata and Take Photos

When visiting Ginzan Onsen, wearing a traditional yukata (a light cotton kimono) provided by their ryokan is part of the onsen town experience! Walking around town in a yukata makes for amazing photos.

Tips Before You Go to Ginzan Onsen Town

1. Book your ryokan early

Ryokans in Ginzan Onsen are very popular and have limited rooms, so it's a good idea to book several months in advance, especially during winter and cherry blossom season. Many of these inns are small and traditional, which makes them quick to fill up.

2. Pack for the seasons

Weather in Ginzan Onsen can change a lot depending on the time of year, so pack clothes that match the season. Winters are snowy and can get really cold, so bring warm layers, gloves, and waterproof shoes. Summers are mild but may still require a light jacket at night. If you're visiting in fall or spring, layers are best for staying comfy all day.

3. Bring cash

Most shops, cafés, and even some ryokans in Ginzan Onsen don't accept credit cards, so it's smart to bring enough Japanese yen. There aren't many ATMs in the area, and the ones you find may not work with foreign cards. Having cash makes everything easier, from buying snacks to paying for a foot bath.

4. Expect limited Wi-Fi and cell signal

Ginzan Onsen is a peaceful, remote getaway, which means you might not get great Wi-Fi or phone signal everywhere. Some ryokans have internet, but it can be slow or limited to common areas. Take it as a chance to unplug and enjoy the quiet, old-timey charm of the town. Download any maps or travel info you'll need ahead of time.

5. Learn onsen etiquette

Always wash and rinse your body before getting in the hot springs at Ginzan Onsen (and any other onsen!), and don't bring towels into the water. Swimming, splashing, and loud talking are a no-go; it's best to keep things calm and quiet. Many ryokans offer helpful guides or signs in English.
