The itinerary was very well planned, and I gained a lot of insight into Vietnamese culture! The weather in Hanoi was extremely hot, but the transfer vehicles were clean, comfortable, and had excellent air conditioning, allowing guests to cool down quickly after returning from their tours. If friends visit Hanoi, I will definitely recommend this tour!

This was my first time traveling in Vietnam and I chose Sao Viet for my trip. I was genuinely impressed by the service. The bus was very modern, clean, and comfortable. The ride was smooth and quiet, which allowed me to relax throughout the journey. One thing I really appreciated was the onboard restroom. It made the long trip much more convenient and comfortable, especially for foreign travelers. The staff were friendly and helpful, even though my Vietnamese is very limited. Another great feature was the door-to-door service. I didn't have to worry about finding transportation after arriving because the shuttle took me directly to my destination. Sao Viet exceeded my expectations. Safe, comfortable, convenient, and professional. I would definitely choose Sao Viet again and highly recommend it to other international travelers visiting Vietnam.

Wow, what a great time! We wish we would have done this on the first night instead of the second! Our guide was incredibly helpful, informative, and kind and we had a fantastic experience! Highly recommend this tour!

This tour was a great experience especially for us first timers in Hanoi. I highly recommend booking this for those who want to appreciate the history and culture of Hanoi in a day. Our guide, Khoi, was really informative and engaging and we’re grateful to have him as our guide since we got to learn a lot of things about Hanoi that you won’t be able to catch if you will just roam the city on your own. We’ll definitely book this again next time! 😊👏🏻

my trip to Sapa was one of the most memorable experiences during my visit to Vietnam, and Sao Viet played a big part in making that journey so enjoyable. As a foreign traveler, I was a little worried about traveling a long distance by bus. However, the moment I stepped onto the Sao Viet sleeper bus, I felt completely at ease. The cabin was spacious, comfortable, and clean. I could lie down comfortably, relax, and enjoy the ride through the night.

What to know about Temple of Literature

The Temple of Literature is a beautiful place in Hanoi that honors Vietnam’s first national university. It was built during the Ly dynasty and dedicated to the Chinese philosopher Confucius. The temple complex has five courtyards, including the Great Middle Gate and the main temple, where you can see stone stelae resting on stone turtles. These stones show the names of scholars who passed the royal exams at the imperial academy. When you visit, remember to check the opening hours and dress respectfully by avoiding revealing clothes. Many Vietnamese students still come to the Literature Temple to pray for luck in their exams. Around the city, you can explore the Old Quarter, Train Street, and places like Joseph Cathedral to see Hanoi’s mix of tradition and modern life. The Temple of Literature and other sites help you understand Vietnam’s long history and its deep respect for education and culture. Book a Temple of Literature tour now on Klook!

Things to Do in the Temple of Literature, Hanoi

See the Great Middle Gate

As you walk through the Great Middle Gate into the first courtyard, you'll be welcomed by a calm, green space. At the top of the gate, you'll see a carving of a fish. According to legend, the gods held a contest where fish had to jump over huge waves---those who made it became powerful dragons. The fish represent students, showing that with hard work and effort, anyone can pass exams and achieve great things.

Check out the Pavilion of Constellation

The Pavilion of Constellation may be small, but it has a beautiful and balanced design. It stands on four brick pillars that support a wooden upper part with round doors, handrails, and a traditional roof. This pavilion is an important symbol of Hanoi and even appears on Vietnam's 100,000 VND banknote. It's a great spot to see the ancient architecture and take photos.

Visit the Well of Heavenly Clarity

The Well of Heavenly Clarity is a peaceful courtyard with a large square pond in the center. In one corner, you'll see stone turtles carrying tall stone stelae on their backs. These stelae honor Confucianism, praise past kings, and share details about royal exams and the scholars who passed them. It's a great place to learn about Vietnam's respect for knowledge and history.

Admire the Gate to Great Success

In the fourth courtyard, known as the Gate to Great Success, you'll find a stunning House of Ceremonies and a temple dedicated to Confucius. This area stands out for its deep red columns and wooden ceilings, where traditional lanterns hang softly above. It's a peaceful space that shows the beauty of traditional architecture and Vietnam's respect for learning and wisdom.

Drop by the Grounds of Imperial Academy

The fifth courtyard is home to a large building with two floors. On the first floor, you'll find a statue of Chu Van An, the first rector of the Imperial Academy and a respected teacher who devoted his life to education.

The second floor honors three emperors---Emperor Ly Thanh Tong, Emperor Ly Thai Tong, and Emperor Le Thanh Tong---who helped build and protect the academy. This area shows how much Vietnamese society values teachers and learning.

Popular Attractions Near the Temple of Literature

West Lake

West Lake is the largest lake in Hanoi and a great place to relax and enjoy the view. It's only about 10--15 minutes by car or motorbike from the Temple of Literature. Around the lake, you can visit famous spots like the Hanoi Tran Quoc Pagoda, one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Vietnam. You can also walk along the lake, take a bike ride, or stop at a café to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.

Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum

The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is a famous place in Hanoi where you can see the preserved body of Ho Chi Minh, the founding leader of modern Vietnam. You can walk quietly through the building to pay your respects and learn more about his life and legacy.

There's also a small museum and peaceful gardens nearby to explore. It takes about 5 to 10 minutes by car from the Temple of Literature, or around 20 minutes if you walk. Make sure to dress respectfully and arrive early, as it can get crowded.

Long Bien Bridge

Just a 15-minute drive from the Temple of Literature, the Long Bien Bridge is a historic structure built during the French colonial period. It stretches over the Red River and gives you great views, especially at sunrise or sunset. You can walk or bike across the bridge, take photos, or watch the trains pass by below. It's a peaceful spot where you can see daily life along the river and learn about Hanoi's past.

Hanoi Train Street

Hanoi Train Street is a fun and unique stop just a 10-minute car ride from the Temple of Literature. It's a narrow street where trains pass just inches away from homes, cafés, and tourists! You can grab a drink at a small café and watch the train pass by. Be sure to check train times before you go, as safety rules are strict.
