1. Stroll through the Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall
Tourists will be glad to know that this popular attraction can be enjoyed for free! Block off an afternoon in your itinerary to roam the grounds of Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall – but of course not until you’ve witnessed the changing of the guards!

2. Visit the Martyr’s Shrine
One of Taipei’s top attractions, The Martyr’s Shrine, is surprisingly free of admission for all visitors! Located in Zhongshan District of Taipei, the popular landmark was created in honor of the war dead of the Republic of China. While you’re here, be sure to watch the changing of the guards, which commences once every hour.

How to get there: Take the Red Line 2 to Jiantan Station and take a Bus (267, 556, or 902) to the Martyr’s Shrine.
3. Observe local traditions at Longshan Temple
As one of the largest and oldest temples in the country, a quick people-watching trip to the Longshan Temple is a must on our list! Apart from the fact that it is free to enter, we highly recommend a visit to admire the intricate architecture, to observe local traditions, and to get a chance to take part in some daily devotions as well!

4. Climb Elephant Mountain
For postcard-perfect views, take some time out of your day and hike up the Elephant Mountain! Whether you’re making the hike in the morning or at night, you’ll surely be rewarded with unparalleled views of the city. First time hikers, don’t fret! The Elephant Mountain hike is quite easy and will only take 20 minutes from Xiangshan MTR Station.
How to get there: Take the red line all the way to the Xiangshan MTR Station and take Exit 2
5. Take a snap by the Taipei 101 building
No trip to Taipei is complete without a trip to Taipei 101! Although entrance to the Taipei 101 observatory isn’t free, you can take the train to Taipei 101 Station and snap a photo with the iconic building! Afterwards, you can check out the markets surrounding the area for some milk tea and stinky tofu!

6. Discover history at Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall
The Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall was completed in 1972 in honor of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the founder of the Republic of China. Here, tourists can explore and discover the history surrounding the life of Sun Yat-sen through artifacts and exhibits.

7. Walk the Jiufen Old Street
With the Taipei Fun Pass, passholders get a complimentary ride to iconic city of Jiufen from Ximending and back! Jiufen Old Street is considered a top tourist destination – and for good reason. So while you’re here, take the time to maneuver your way through the narrow food stall-lined alleyways, and discover quaint tea shops such as Amei, which inspired the film, Spirited Away.
8. Get some R&R at Da’an Forest Park
It’s no secret that the city of Taipei can get quite chaotic – especially with all the shopping centres and night markets that surround the area. So if you’re keen to escape and take a breather, your best option would be Da’an Forest Park – the local version of “Central Park” for Taipei residents. Feel free to go for a run, prepare a lovely picnic, or simply admire the small space of nature in the city!

How to get there: Take the Muzha Line to Da’an Station and walk West to Xinyi Road towards Da’an Park.
9. Discover hidden Temples
Apart from the Longshan Temple and the Martyr’s Shrine, you’ll be surprised to know that Taipei is actually dotted with a number of temples scattered throughout the city. So if you’ve got a culturally-curious mind, a hidden temple hunt might just be your cup of tea.
