Guide

What is “YBA”? In August 1988, Damien Hirst, who was studying at Goldsmiths, University of London, organized “Freeze,” an exhibition showcasing the works of students and graduates in a warehouse district in East London. Hirst and his contemporaries chose materials from entirely new perspectives, created groundbreaking art, and actively carved out their own opportunities to exhibit their work.

In 1992, art historian Michael Corris referred to them as the "Young British Artists (YBA)" in the magazine Artforum. The term YBA then spread to the general public through an exhibition of the same name held at the Saatchi Gallery. Thanks to the uninhibited and dynamic activities of the YBA artists, the British art scene of the 1990s captured global attention.
