I visited Kumamoto Castle for the second time! As expected of one of Japan's three most famous castles, it was large and magnificent! A few years ago, a major earthquake in Kumamoto destroyed parts of the castle, and restoration work is still ongoing, but from a tourist's perspective, there were no issues touring Kumamoto Castle! I highly recommend purchasing your admission tickets in advance through Klook! This is because at the entrance, there are separate lines for buying tickets and for those who pre-purchased tickets. If you show the staff your QR code, you can enter immediately, which significantly reduces your waiting time, making it a huge advantage!
Kumamoto Castle is hassle-free and a must-visit when you are in Kumamoto. I definitely recommend it to anyone visiting Kumamoto for the first time. The castle is very unique compared to Himeji and Matsumoto. The interior of the castle is modern, and there is air conditioning inside. There was also a samurai dance show outside the castle, which was very fun to watch.
Experience: If you're planning a visit to Kumamoto, this is a must-see destination. My visit to Kumamoto was specifically to see Kumamoto Castle. After visiting, I felt it was definitely a worthwhile choice. However, it was unfortunate that Kumamoto Castle was partially destroyed by the earthquake in 2016. It was also impressive to see them taking a long-term approach to properly restoring the cultural heritage site. Tip: If you purchase your admission ticket in advance on Klook, you can enter quickly by showing it directly to the staff without having to purchase or exchange tickets, so avoid the long lines and buy your tickets in advance!
Very convenient. just show the qr code before entering. very nice castle and big. lucky that there is still cherry blossoms inside the castle grounds when went there. must see.
Kumamoto Castle is even more spectacular than photos suggest. I visited during cherry blossom season, and every shot of the main keep, the blue sky, and the fully bloomed cherry trees looked like a postcard. Buying the combo ticket was very convenient; the Wakuwakuza Museum is located within Sakuranobaba Johsaien, so after exploring the castle, it was perfect to go shopping and enjoy some desserts. Booking through Klook was a smooth process and saved a lot of time communicating on-site. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for efficiency.
Having undergone restoration after the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake, the castle tower is now fully repaired and feels exceptionally majestic compared to other Japanese castles. Unfortunately, due to the earthquake, some buildings are still under renovation and remain closed. Notably, the path from the entrance to the castle tower consists of elevated walkways, possibly due to ongoing repairs, to prevent visitors from walking on potentially dangerous sections. The castle tower houses a wealth of historical information about the castle, and if you have time, a visit to Kumamoto Castle is highly recommended.
In Kokura, there are two attractions with separate admission fees. The museum is well-organized, featuring interactive games and a simple kimono try-on experience. This time, trying the affordable and delicious pufferfish at Karatsu Fish Market is also a great option. Thanks to the tour guide's suggestions and planning, the itinerary wasn't too rushed, allowing us to fully experience the charm of Moji Port.
You can scan the code directly at the entrance to get in, no need to exchange tickets. Kumamoto Castle has so much to see, and the scenery is beautiful. I highly recommend it! I suggest buying the combined ticket that includes Wakuwakuza. There are many interactive experiences about Kumamoto Castle inside, as well as a small theater. It's definitely worth it!

Guide

  • Kumamoto Castle is one of Japan’s top cherry blossom viewing spots. Every spring, the castle grounds are blanketed in pink sakura, attracting visitors for hanami (cherry blossom viewing)
  • Kumamoto Castle remains a cultural treasure, offering visitors a deep dive into Japan’s feudal past and an inspiring story of recovery
  • Despite severe damage from the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake, ongoing restoration has made parts of the main keep open, symbolizing resilience and community spirit

The restoration of Kumamoto Castle's entire tower has been completed, and starting from April 26, 2021, visitors can enjoy the fully renewed exhibits and the stunning view from the top floor

The updated exhibits primarily focus on the history of the castle tower, covering its construction, destruction during the Satsuma Rebellion, reconstruction in 1960, and the damage and recovery from the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake. Information is presented through models and videos in a clear and easy-to-understand way

To enhance your visit, Kumamoto Castle offers a free mobile application called "Kumamoto Castle Official App." This app provides audio and subtitles for the explanatory texts and video content of the castle's permanent exhibition. Additionally, on the top floor of the tower, the AR function allows you to enjoy a panoramic view overlaid with old photographs from the Meiji era. We highly recommend downloading the app before your visit
