We were very grateful for the good weather, which is very important for enjoying a trip. In the afternoon, after boarding the boat and heading out to sea, we first went to see a waterfall. After anchoring, you could choose to go kayaking or take a small boat to enjoy the scenery, and you could even jump into the water (though it was very cold, even in January). In the evening, we enjoyed a buffet dinner. There weren't many choices, but the food tasted good, with pork, beef, lamb, chicken, and fish, so there was always something to like, and there were desserts too. However, the seating arrangement wasn't ideal; seats were pre-assigned, and we had to sit with strangers. In the evening, you could watch the stars from the deck and see the entire Milky Way. We woke up very early in the morning for breakfast, and on the return trip, we saw sea lions, with staff providing explanations. The room wasn't large, but the bed was very comfortable. The only issues were that the water pressure in the bathroom wasn't strong, and the drainage wasn't smooth. The two-day, one-night trip wasn't long, but it was very fulfilling.
Having traveled all this way to Milford Sound, how could one not stay a night? The heavy rain brought abundant water, making the waterfalls even more spectacular, and the misty atmosphere was like a movie scene where a pirate ship is about to set sail. We were lucky enough to see wild penguins and playful seals. Inside the calm fjord, on a comfortable mattress, I had a wonderful night's sleep! Absolutely worth it!
There are two overnight fjords in the national park, Doubtful Sound and Milford Sound. If you have ample time, I recommend visiting Doubtful Sound. It feels more like an exploration of a hidden gem and is much quieter, with more fjords to explore and a larger area to venture out to sea. If you are prone to seasickness, it's advisable to bring motion sickness medication. The itineraries for both are similar, but Doubtful Sound slightly surpasses Milford in terms of ample time for each activity and meal. In Doubtful Sound, kayaking has a purpose, whereas in Milford, it's aimless paddling in the fjord.
It's really beautiful! And we also saw sea lions and dolphins 🤩 but it's really too expensive!!! The translation on Klook has some issues, remember to confirm the number of people and the room type you booked.
Traveling all the way to Milford Sound, I truly recommend staying overnight on a cruise to fully experience the fjord's scenery at different times of day: dawn, sunrise, dusk, and night. Unfortunately, the clouds were too thick the night we went, so we didn't see any stars. After boarding, there were appetizers initially, and the dinner buffet dishes were quite delicious. However, seating is assigned, so people you know might be split up at different tables. But because of this, we met other travelers from Taiwan. The breakfast buffet the next day was also very rich; you definitely won't go hungry on the ship! We chose to take a shuttle bus from Te Anau to Milford Sound, avoiding the fatigue of driving ourselves. The driver also provided commentary along the way and stopped at scenic spots for everyone to take photos.
Milford Sound is truly amazing! We saw it in both sunshine and rain, and it was definitely worth the visit!!
We had really good weather! Kayaking was super fun, the food was pretty good, and the drinks were reasonably priced. When you think about how many activities it actually includes, it's actually a pretty good bargain!
The scenery of Milford Sound is truly beautiful. There are kayaks and small boats on board for you to experience. We were very lucky to see rare yellow-eyed penguins while on the small boat. The food prepared on board was delicious, and there was a detailed guided tour. If the weather is good, you can go to the deck at midnight to stargaze, and during the day, you might even see dolphins. I recommend taking a coach from Queenstown to avoid the hassle of a long drive. The coach will also provide commentary along the way and stop at scenic spots for photos. The entire trip is well worth it!
This was a unique and memorable experience and I'm glad I did it. We got picked up at Te Anau and the drive + guide (Brandon) was informative and interesting. It was amazing to have the fiords to ourselves at Milford and see the sunset and stars from the boat. The cruise was well executed, had sufficient meals and the room was basic though be mindful of thin walls. Nothing beats waking up in nature and seeing dolphins and seals and being the only boat on the seas early morning. Would do it again and recommend. Food options were vegetarian friendly.
Staying overnight on the boat was truly worth it! We saw dolphins shortly after departing, and at night, we even saw seals playing by the boat! The sky full of stars was incredibly beautiful! The food on board was also quite good. We were lucky enough to join the kayaking activity to watch the sunset, which was fantastic!
