This was a great experience, I really appreciated learning the meaning behind the tea ceremony itself before the instructor started preparing the matcha. She took time to explain thoroughly before we tried making our own tea. It ran a little over on time (about 20 minutes), but I didn't mind because the whole experience felt so authentic. I also enjoyed the seasonal sweets (sakura themed ones pictured for sakura season) and dressing up in the kimono for the ceremony.
This event was very rewarding. The court president who hosted the tea ceremony was kind and showed respect for the guests. From this, I learned the spirit of the tea ceremony, which is composed of four characters: "harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility," each representing a different meaning. "Harmony" refers to mutual respect and humility between host and guest, as well as the harmonious unity between people and the tea room environment. "Respect" refers to mutual respect and reverence for the tea ceremony itself. "Purity" represents the cleanliness and tranquility of body and mind, eliminating distractions. "Tranquility" pursues a Zen-like solitude and simplicity, an artistic conception of transcending the mundane and returning to nature. Before the tea ceremony began, the on-site staff professionally and skillfully helped all nine of us put on kimonos and get dressed. It was truly an unforgettable and moving event.
I was pleasantly surprised to have the opportunity to try on a kimono. The staff was very kind and helped me put it on with great care, which made me really happy. This time, I experienced a tea ceremony. It was my first time learning the etiquette of turning the plate and using kuromoji chopsticks, which felt very new and refreshing. The wagashi were beautifully presented, and the matcha was authentic and delicious. The instructor was very patient and taught everything in detail, allowing me to truly appreciate the beauty of the tea ceremony. If you’re visiting Tokyo, I highly recommend this experience!
I definitely recommend it! Not only do you learn about Japanese traditions, but you also get to truly experience them. You get to make your own matcha, enjoy amazing sweets, wear a gorgeous kimono, and take incredible photos. It’s a wonderful, highly interactive course. Although I’ve done a tea ceremony in Kyoto before, this one in Asakusa was honestly even better. They served two rounds of high-quality wagashi, and the hosts were exceptionally kind and welcoming. You can really tell they genuinely want to share the true heart and essence of Japanese tea culture with you!
It was a perfect tea ceremony experience. Ms. Aiko, the tea master, impressed me with her elegance and professionalism. Every movement she made embodied the spirit of Zen, revealing that the beauty of the tea ceremony lies not only in its form, but in the calm and mindfulness it inspires.
This was such a lovely, peaceful, educational and cultural experience! I was able to pick a beautiful kimono to wear during the experience. I was dressed in all the details that go along with the kimono outfit, held coordinating fans and posed for photos. The explanation of all the movements and their significance were explained and demonstrated. Then I was able to practice. The tea and sweets were delicious and the whole event was a must do!
A special and intimate experience I’ll never forget. I’m incredibly grateful that they still pushed through with my booking even though I was the only guest scheduled for that time. It could’ve easily been canceled, but instead, I was welcomed warmly and given the full experience. The tea master was so kind, knowledgeable, and patient. You can really feel their passion not just for the tea, but for sharing the heart behind the tradition. I learned so much more than I expected, from the history and tools to the meaning behind every gesture. It felt like more than just a cultural activity it was peaceful, respectful, and grounding. I walked away with both a warm cup of matcha and a full heart. Highly recommended if you want an authentic and meaningful experience in Tokyo. 🍵
Tea Master, Atsuko-san, is patient and very happy to answer questions. Staff Aiko-san and Masayo-san are extremely helpful and competent. All three are very active in helping us take photos offering different props; love it! I highly recommend, even for solo travellers! Activity: Wear kimono, take photos, learn tea drinking etiquette, make matcha, more photos. Atsuko-san, Aiko-san, Masayo-san, thanks to all of you, I had a wonderful experience. Thank you very much!
