I believe this is a must-visit place if you're traveling to Japan. I once took a ropeway up to the summit of the Alps in Chamonix Mont Blanc, France, and while this wasn't quite on the same scale or as breathtaking, I still consider it a rare experience in Asia. I also liked that the distance from parking the rental car to the ropeway station was very short. The ropeway facilities were clean, and the views from the observation deck and the permanent snow trail were excellent. I was worried the observation deck would be cold, but they had underfloor electric heating, similar to 'ondol,' laid throughout, which made it surprisingly warm and pleasant. This time, it was a family trip with children, so we had to travel by rental car, but if I get the chance later, I'd love to visit by hiking. There were quite a few hikers walking up to the observation deck with the permanent snow. I think it would be wonderful to visit in winter too, and it would be especially fantastic to try the night star-gazing ropeway program held in early May (I missed it by a day or two). Personally, I'm very disappointed that I missed the opportunity to see the stars pouring down from the permanent snow-capped mountain summit with my own eyes. I hope to visit again someday when this night star-gazing program is running.
