I found out that the restaurant where I had a delicious meal on my last trip to Vietnam offered a cooking class tour, so I arranged to join it. In the morning, I took a Grab (self-arranged) from my hotel to the market, which was the meeting point. From 8:00 AM, Chef Hu and the other participants (a father and son from Taiwan, a cheerful couple from the Philippines, and two cooking enthusiasts from Japan, including myself) listened to Chef Hu's friendly and cheerful explanations as we explored dried goods, grains, fresh fish, vegetables, fruits, and che (Vietnamese sweet soup). We then moved to the kitchen by taxi arranged by the chef. The system was to cook three dishes and then eat them. We learned in a relaxed atmosphere, with thoughtful considerations like sitting down to cut vegetables, so we didn't get tired. The portions were so generous that we didn't need lunch, and the food tasted great. All the dishes were ones I wanted to recreate when I returned home. Finally, while enjoying a dessert of ginger syrup with mochi prepared by the chef, we joined our classmates despite only being able to speak simple English. We asked the chef questions, and it was a wonderful four hours. A local Vietnamese madam who wasn't on the market tour joined us from the kitchen. She used very good fish sauce for the lesson, so everyone was keenly interested in asking about the seasonings. It made me realize that "Hoa Tuc" is a restaurant that even locals find appealing. I heard that they make different menus on different days, so I'd like to participate again on a different day when I visit Vietnam. The lesson, the cute recipe book, and the photos with everyone became souvenirs for myself.
Chef Yen is an amazing cooking instructor and a great market guide. She made our cooking class wonderful and we felt at home. Also, during our market tour, she made sure to introduce us to the local produce - she basically translated for us and let us buy what we like in the market. 10 stars for her! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
It is recommended! It is one of the best options to learn about Vietnamese cuisine and culture. Chef Uyen taught us from beginning to end with great detail. The class was fun, and of course, I enjoyed the food because it was all amazing. The kitchen itself was very clean and tidy.
I've participated in cooking classes in Thailand and Korea before, but so far, this one is the best. The instructor, Lilia, was very engaging, and the market tour she gave was very informative. Be careful as the market can be wet underfoot, especially since it's a rainy region. Once we moved to the restaurant where the cooking class was held, it was comfortable with air conditioning. We made three recipes, and the great thing was that we could eat each dish immediately after making it, allowing us to enjoy it fresh and understand the flavors more deeply. The recipe notebook and a small surprise souvenir were very satisfying. Also, since there were only five of us in our group, we received thorough and easy-to-understand instruction, which was very helpful. Highly satisfied!!
We really enjoyed being taken around the market and learning about the different things sold there! The cooking class was a lot of fun and I would recommend it to anyone travelling. It's a great way to learn how to cook some authentic dishes and more about Vietnamese cuisine!
One of the best classes I've been to. I got to know my classmates and chitchat with them. It felt like we were all breaking bread and enjoying good food with good conversation. Our instructor chef helped us have that kind of environment. I've been to several classes in different countries and this is by far the most personal. Thank you so much for this opportunity! x
I participated in a market tour and cooking class. There was an incident where a participant didn't show up until almost an hour after the meeting time, but their flexible response in an emergency left a good impression. During the market tour, they sincerely answered each of our questions, and we had the valuable experience of sourcing ingredients alongside locals. In the cooking class, we used fresh ingredients bought at the morning market to make two appetizers and a main dish. I participated alone, but I had a fun and fulfilling time interacting with another participant. All the staff were kind, lively, and proficient in English, so even solo travelers can participate with peace of mind. There's also a cooking class-only plan, but personally, I recommend the market tour + cooking class plan! If you're undecided, please give it a try!
I skipped the market tour and went straight to the restaurant to join the class. We made three main dishes, and dessert was provided, not made. There was a vegan participant, and separate ingredients were prepared for them. Each time a dish was completed, the table was tidied up for us, which made it comfortable to focus on the class. The cooking is easy enough for beginners to learn. It's a bit disappointing that the price is higher than expected.
