What to expect
First Stop: Toshogu Shrine A pinnacle of Edo art, it is one of Japan’s most representative historical and cultural heritage sites. From the “Three Wise Monkeys” symbolizing wisdom (see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil), to the “Sleeping Cat” foretelling peace, and the Chinese sages and mythical auspicious beasts, it is an encyclopedia of Japanese craftsmanship. The vermilion halls and towering ancient cedars create a solemn atmosphere, and the sight of autumn maples dyed in gold leaf is breathtaking.
Second Stop: Irohazaka Winding Road (View from the car, no disembarking) Japan’s legendary winding road. Named for its 48 hairpin bends corresponding to the 48 Japanese kana characters. In autumn, the entire road transforms into a three-dimensional gallery of crimson and gold, rated as one of the “most beautiful autumn roads in the world.”
Third Stop: Lake Chuzenji Japan’s highest volcanic lake. Azaleas in spring, lush green trees in summer, red leaves in autumn, and snowscapes in winter – it offers beautiful scenery in all four seasons. Legend has it that ancient shrines are submerged at the bottom of the lake, and when mist fills the air, it resembles the fantasy world of “Princess Mononoke.”
Fourth Stop: Kegon Falls One of Japan’s three great waterfalls. The waters of Lake Chuzenji thunder down a hundred-meter cliff, and the splashing mist refracts an eternal rainbow in the sunlight. In winter, there is another spectacular sight: cold currents freeze the waterfall into giant ice pillars, which glow with a mysterious blue light under night illumination, forming a surreal scene with the lakeside cedars. The writer Tokutomi Roka once marveled at this scene as the “concretization of heaven and earth’s wrath.”

I joined this tour today and it was amazing! Yuma is incredibly knowledgeable and gave us historical context not just for the Nikko Toshogu Shrine, but also for Mt. Nantai, Lake Chūzenji, Kegon Falls, and Mt. Iroha. Her insights made every stop come alive. She switched effortlessly between English, Chinese, and Japanese to make sure everyone felt included. The pacing was ideal. We had plenty of time to explore each location and the whole itinerary was so well organized that wrapping up at the shrine felt like the perfect finale. It was an amazing experience. Glad that I booked this trip during winter on 20-Jan. Lake Chuzenji was amazing with the Mt Nantai as the backdrop. Kegon waterfall was mystical in winter snow. Toshogu Shrine lives up to its reputation as a UNESCO heritage site.
This trip was a dream come true, just as I had hoped. When the shrine I had longed to see finally appeared before me, its vermilion torii gates stood quietly amidst the lush green trees, and the wind rustled the bells on the eaves, producing a clear, melodious sound. The smooth journey made this wonderful experience even better—no bumps, no delays, and the scenery outside the window flowed by gently. I especially want to thank Ms. Yuma for her meticulous and thoughtful arrangements, and the driver for his steady and professional driving, which made every leg of the journey feel secure and reassuring. our friendly tour guide is very helpful and professional. We enjoyed the day ride of the Iroha Mountain winding road. The weather is fine on the day and feeling very cold when the wind is blowing at the lakeside. The viewing of waterfall is very unique, we need to take a elevator from the ground and go down 100M to view the waterfall. The Toshogu shrine is amazing with the unique architecture, forest and history of the place. You really need to visit Nikko to understand the history of Japan.
Our tour guide, Michael Li Ming-chang, was very friendly and humorous, sharing a lot of history that helped us better understand the attractions! The entire Nikko itinerary was well-planned, and the timing was excellent. After entering Toshogu Shrine, there's a booth where you can rent an audio guide for 500 yen, which explains each hall—it's definitely worth it! At Kegon Falls, I highly recommend paying 600 yen to take the elevator down to the bottom; the view from there is much more beautiful!
Today, I participated in a day tour of Nikko. Our guide, Yuma, provided detailed explanations of Nikko's attractions in English, Chinese, and Japanese. Lake Chuzenji, Japan's highest lake, had crystal-clear waters, and combined with today's beautiful weather, the scenery was truly picturesque and stunning. Our second stop was Kegon Falls, where we took an elevator down 109 meters to admire the magnificent view of the waterfall from below. Finally, we visited Nikko Toshogu Shrine, with its lush, forested path and ornate temple carvings, which left a lasting impression.
The day before, Director Liu will send an email to your inbox, letting you know you can add him on Line or WeChat. During the bus tour, the guide will introduce the day's itinerary and important notes. The scenery in Nikko is beautiful, and if you have any questions, Director Liu will answer them patiently. Thanks to Director Liu's guidance, we were able to see the historic Toshogu Shrine and the small sleeping cat today.
Excellent day trip on a well organised tour, our guide Yuma was very nice and explained in English, Chinese and Japanese. The sights were all beautiful. well worth it!
We participated in a tour led by Xiao Xue. Throughout the trip, the tour guide provided detailed introductions to each attraction and carefully reminded everyone about the routes and schedule. Due to an unavoidable traffic accident on the road, our itinerary was delayed, and we lost a lot of time, which unfortunately meant we had to shorten our visits to some attractions. Amazing tour with a great guide! Our guide, Alex, was great and made the whole experience even better. I honestly loved every part of this tour, but the highlight for me was the first stop — Lake Chuzenji. 🥹 It’s the highest volcanic lake in Japan, and the views were absolutely stunning. The mountains surrounding the lake, topped with ice caps, were breathtaking!! and Mt. Nantai looked especially beautiful. 🏔️🩵
