We had an amazing Nara and Kyoto tour today! Everything was organized, making the trip smooth and enjoyable from start to finish. Visiting Nara Park and interacting with the friendly deer was definitely a highlight, while Kyoto's beautiful temples, shrines, and traditional streets gave us a deeper appreciation of Japan's rich culture and history. Our guide-VALERIE, was knowledgeable, accommodating, and shared interesting stories and local insights that made each stop even more memorable. The pace of the tour was just right, giving us enough time to explore, take photos, and truly soak in the atmosphere. Transportation was comfortable, and the entire experience was stress-free. Overall, it was a wonderful day filled with unforgettable sights, delicious food, and plenty of memorable moments. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to experience the charm, history, and beauty of Nara and Kyoto in a single day. Thank you for making my solo travel so special! -LagaJuan101 (Instagram name)

What an incredible tour! we wholeheartedly enjoyed our experience, and felt as though we were able to absorb so much culture and history in just one day. Our guide, Valerie, was exceptional. She was attentive, personable, and couldn’t have done more to ensure our day was as insightful as it possibly could be. If we are lucky enough to return to Kyoto, there’s only one tour we’d consider.

This is my second time riding the Arashiyama Scenic Railway. This time, I mainly wanted to bring my son to experience the unique train ride and enjoy the scenery along the way. It was very convenient to book and reserve seats on Klook in advance, which meant we didn't have to rush or buy tickets on the spot. I highly recommend it to tourists who want to enjoy the Arashiyama scenery.

What to do in Arashiyama

Arashiyama Bamboo Grove

Discover a world of tranquility and wonder at the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, also known as the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, in central Arashiyama. This iconic Kyoto destination is like no other, with tall bamboo stalks that create a mesmerizing, otherworldly atmosphere framed by surrounding mountains. Whether you're an early riser or a relaxed explorer, walking through this serene pathway is an experience that will leave you in awe. Capture the perfect photo and let the gentle sway of the bamboo transport you to a place of peace and beauty.

To reach the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, take a train to Keifuku Arashiyama Station on the Randen line or Saga-Arashiyama Station on the JR Sagano Line. From either station, it's a short walk to the bamboo forest, the temple grounds, and other nearby attractions.

Tenryu-ji Temple

At Tenryu-ji Temple, discover the historical and spiritual heart of central Arashiyama. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, this Zen temple includes one of Kyoto's finest gardens and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. Established in 1339 and rebuilt multiple times, the temple's current structure reflects its enduring legacy. Wander through its temple grounds and enjoy the tranquil central pond and scenic paths.

Moon Crossing Bridge (Togetsukyo Bridge)

Just nearby lies the famous Moon Crossing Bridge, or Togetsukyo, a beloved symbol of Arashiyama that stretches across the Katsura River. Offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains and cherry blossoms in spring, it connects visitors to other key areas like Okochi-Sanso Villa and Kameyama-koen Park.

Okochi-Sanso Villa

Experience elegance at the former home of actor Okochi Denjiro, the Okochi-Sanso Villa, which rivals even properties once owned by the imperial family. With its peaceful atmosphere, scenic gardens, and tea house offering a delightful matcha treat, it's a refined stop during your Arashiyama visit.

Kameyama-koen Park

For a peaceful escape, head to Kameyama-koen Park, where you can sometimes spot wild monkeys and enjoy panoramic views of the Katsura River and surrounding mountains. During cherry blossom season, the hilltop park becomes particularly enchanting.

Nison-in Temple

Nison-in Temple is known for its beautiful tree-lined approach and peaceful environment, perfect for a quiet retreat. It's especially picturesque in autumn and spring.

Sagano Romantic Train

The Sagano Romantic Train is a popular ride through the mountains west of Arashiyama. This scenic route follows the Katsura River, offering stunning views perfect for nature lovers.

Toei Kyoto Studio Park

For families or fans of Japanese cinema, Toei Kyoto Studio Park offers a fun glimpse into samurai-era film sets and activities. It's an immersive cultural experience located not far from central Arashiyama.

Jojakko-ji Temple

Tucked into the hills, Jojakko-ji Temple is another serene gem, offering peace and quiet along with stunning views of Kyoto. It's particularly famous for its moss-covered grounds and autumn foliage.

Local Foods at Arashiyama

In Arashiyama, sampling local delights is a must-do experience. Try specialties like Yuba, a tofu skin dish, and savor Kaiseki Ryori, a traditional multi-course Japanese meal with seasonal ingredients. Treat yourself to Matcha sweets and try Kyoto-style mackerel sushi known as saba-zushi. During autumn, don't miss out on fried maple leaves, a seasonal delicacy in the area. Explore the diverse culinary offerings in Arashiyama by visiting local eateries and street food stalls to discover delicious and unique dishes.

Staying close to the main attractions like the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, Togetsukyo Bridge, and Tenryu-ji Temple can enhance your overall experience in this picturesque area.
