Participated in the Amanohashidate and Ine Boathouse one-day tour on November 4th. The tour guide, Ember, provided detailed explanations that helped us better understand the itinerary. At the stops, she arranged for a rest area stop for everyone to use the restroom, and she also provided reminders when there were stairs to go up and down. I recommend today's attentive female tour guide, Ember.

I recently had the pleasure of taking a tour led by Lee, and I can't recommend him highly enough! From the moment we met, Lee's infectious enthusiasm and sense of humor created a warm and inviting atmosphere. He has a natural ability to make everyone feel comfortable and included, which really enhanced our experience. Lee's knowledge of the scenic spots we visited was impressive. He not only provided insightful explanations about each location but also shared fascinating stories that brought the sights to life. His passion for the area was evident, and it made the tour feel more like an engaging conversation with a friend rather than a lecture. What truly sets Lee apart, though, is his caring and supportive nature. He was attentive to everyone's needs, making sure all participants were included and having a great time. Whether it was helping someone with a camera or ensuring that everyone was comfortable during the tour, Lee went above and beyond.

The tour guide was very friendly and provided detailed explanations. They also pre-arranged fixed seats on the tour bus. Although the time was tight, we arrived and departed from each attraction on schedule. The only downside was the unpredictable weather that day, with alternating rain and sun. 🥲

Amanohashidate: Things To Do

Walk Across the Sandbar

Take a stroll or rent a bike to cross the pine-covered sandbar on foot. With thousands of pine trees, ocean views, and sandy paths, the route is peaceful and family-friendly, making it enjoyable even for children.

Amanohashidate View Land (Southern End)

Located near Amanohashidate Station, this mountaintop park offers a panoramic view of the sandbar. Take the cable car or chairlift to the terrace for breathtaking scenery that resembles a dragon flying into the sky. Attractions include a Ferris wheel, go-karts, and family-friendly facilities.

Kasamatsu Park (Northern End)

On the opposite side of the sandbar lies Kasamatsu Park, accessible by the Amanohashidate cable car or bus. The view from here is famous for the traditional "matanozoki" pose, looking at the sandbar upside down through your legs, making it appear like a path to heaven.

Amanohashidate Beach

In summer, visitors can relax at Amanohashidate Beach, located along the sandbar. The calm waters of Miyazu Bay make it perfect for swimming, sunbathing, or enjoying a family outing.

Sightseeing Boats on Miyazu Bay & Ine Bay

Hop on sightseeing boats for a different perspective of Amanohashidate. Cruises operate regularly across Miyazu Bay and Ine Bay, passing by charming boat houses and traditional fishing spots. These tours often operate year-round, but schedules may vary depending on the weather.

Chion-ji Temple

At the southern end near Amanohashidate Station, visit Chion-ji Temple, home to a massive gate and cultural treasures dating back to the Edo period. The temple grounds are peaceful, with a souvenir shop nearby selling charms and local specialties.

Motoise Kono Shrine

Located at the northern end, Motoise Kono Shrine is deeply tied to Japanese mythology and is older than Ise Jingu. The shrine is surrounded by forests, making it a spiritual stop during your trip.

Relaxation & Hot Springs

After exploring, unwind in the local hot springs. Many hotels and ryokan around the Amanohashidate area offer open-air baths (rotenburo) with sweeping ocean views. Guest rooms often include traditional tatami flooring and private baths, perfect for an overnight stay.

How to Access Amanohashidate

  • By Train: From Kyoto Station, take the Kyoto Tango Railway to Amanohashidate Station, located at the southern end of the sandbar.

  • By Bus: Highway buses operate regularly between Kyoto, Osaka, and Amanohashidate.

  • By Car: Use the Kyoto Jukan Expressway for convenient access. Parking facilities are available near major attractions.
