Must visit visa-free winter destinations – from South Korea to Russia!

Living in a tropical country has always prompted us to dream of experiencing snow at least once in our lifetime. Sadly, most countries that experience snowfall would require a visa for us Filipinos to visit. But what if we told you that you need not go through the grueling visa process to experience a winter wonderland this holiday season?
You read that right! We’ve pulled together ten destinations you can experience snow in this holiday season – without the hassle of getting a visa! So what are you waiting for? Get those puffer jackets and get reading!

    1. St. Petersburg, Russia

In case you missed it, Russian officials have declared free e-visa entry for Filipinos to selected areas in Russia! Yup, that’s right – you can now visit St. Petersburg (and as well as several other regions) with a free e-visa that can be found on their website. Although the maximum duration for any e-visa entry is capped at 8 days, there is already so much to see and do within that time frame! To give you an idea of things to do in St. Petersburg, Russia, check out our top picks for attractions and activities.

    2. South Korea (Jeju Island)

For the winter holiday of your K-Drama dreams, why not book a ticket to the coastal town of Jeju Island? Yup, that’s right – Philippine passport holders are entitled to entry to this part of South Korea year round without the struggle of getting a visa!
With or without an oppa, you can relive your favorite K-Dramas, have a hot cup of ramyeon, and enjoy long walks along the snow covered national parks! Although we can understand why Jeju Island is a top tourist destination during the summer holidays thanks to its many UNESCO Heritage Sites, we can’t deny that it’s quite the magical destination during the winter season, as well. For more things to do, check out our 3D2N guide to Jeju Island, South Korea!

    3. Taiwan

It’s time to take advantage of our visa-free access to Taiwan while we can! If you’re headed to Taipei this Christmas holiday, we highly suggest taking a day trip out of the city to the Central Mountain Range for a surreal snow capped adventure!
During the months of December all through February, you can expect the areas of Yamingshan National Park, Yushan (Jade Mountain), Hehuanshan, Guanshan, and Xueshan to be covered in snow. Not only are these locations absolutely picture perfect, but guests can also sled down the slopes and engage in some competitive snowball fights!
(Note: Philippine passport holders are granted visa-free entry to Taiwan until July 2020)

    4. Vietnam (Sapa)

Snow? In Vietnam? Absolutely! Just north of Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh is a popular trekking site known for its beautiful rice fields and serene ambiance. The sleepy little town of Sapa gets coated in velvet snow during the months of December all through February, producing the winter wonderland of your dreams! If you aren’t able to make it during the winter months – don’t fret! The temperatures in Sapa are naturally cooler than any other city in the country year-round.

    5. Morocco

Tourists usually flock to the Northern African country of Morocco to witness eye-catching architecture, beaches, and golden sand dunes during the warmer months. However, what these people miss out on are the incredible travel activities available during the winter season! Not only do you get to roam the city of Marrakech freely, but you can also take part in winter activities like skiing and snowboarding down the surrounding mountains during the months of December through March.
Also, did you hear? Philippine residents will soon be able to travel to Morocco through direct-flights! While we wait for this day to come, you can start planning out your trip to Marrakech’s IG-worthy spots!

    6. Israel

Tourists will be pleasantly surprised to know that snowfall in Israel starts as early as October! So if you’re already got plans for the Christmas season, you’ve got a good chance at experiencing a winter wonderland in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem (to name a few) several weeks before the holidays kick in!
As Catholicism is a primary religion in the Philippines, we’re sure that a pilgrimage through significant religious sites is the best way to celebrate Christmas in the Holy Land! However, we recommend sparing a couple days to enjoy some winter activities at Mount Hermon or Golan Heights’ ski resorts!

    7. Mongolia

It’s winter year round in Mongolia – a country bordering China and Russia – boasting postcard perfect landscapes and sceneries. Although snowfall is unlikely, tourists can engage in a number of winter activities such as horseback riding, skiing, and mountain climbing! If you’re lucky, you’ll even be able to attend the highly anticipated Festival of Ice every March. Just a word of caution – the temperatures here are quite harsh so make sure to layer, layer, layer!

    8. Peru (Lima District)

Call all mountaineers! Take your ski boots to the mountains of Peru and ski down the mighty slopes of Huaraz of Huascaran for a thrilling holiday experience. These areas are reserved for experts, but if you’ve had little ski touring experience, hiking up the Nevado Pisco is a great mountain to start with. Either way, this adventurous trip to Peru will definitely be a memorable one!

    9. Bolivia (La Paz)

Although the winter slopes by La Paz, Bolivia can be conquered by both beginners and advanced skiers, it takes a great amount of energy and a certain level of fitness to reach the glacier’s summit. However, if you cannot bring yourself to climb up these mountains, the city of La Paz occasionally experiences snowfall, as well!

    10. Nepal

As it is home to eight of the world’s ten highest peaks, we definitely couldn’t leave Nepal out of this list! It is also known to have the best treks above the Himalayas, so frequent mountain climbers would be glad to know they can visit this piece of paradise visa-free!
Apart from the great set of winter activities tourists can enjoy, the scenic landscape of the country is truly a sight for sore eyes. If you’ve got the chance, we highly recommend checking out the snow-capped mountains from up above with this Everest Mountain Flight!
After you take a shot at the slopes, make sure to take a tour of the Kathmandu’s heritage sites or the pagodas of Pokhara!
