What to expect
Must-visit popular attractions departing from Kumamoto, all in one go! Enjoy the beautiful canyon scenery of Takachiho Gorge, the cultural experience of a small train or shrine, the vast grasslands of Kusasenri, and the stunning views of the Aso Volcano crater. The entire trip is easy and allows you to take beautiful photos while enjoying the charm of nature and culture. Warm Reminder Due to potential ticket purchase failures on the Takachiho boat tour network, if you have purchased a package including tickets, we will do our best to secure them for you. If we are unable to purchase them, we will notify you via email at least 4 days in advance. Thank you for your understanding! On the third Thursday of every month, due to the closure of the Takachiho small train, the itinerary will be changed to Takachiho Gorge + optional Takachiho boat tour + Kamishikimi Kumanoza Shrine + Kusasenri + Aso Volcano Plaza.
First Stop: Takachiho Gorge Boat Tour Takachiho Gorge is a famous canyon in Kyushu with steep cliffs and clear streams. The Manai Falls cascade from above, creating a picturesque scene. Walking along the canyon trail or taking a boat tour allows you to experience both the grandeur of nature and a peaceful atmosphere. Please note: Solo travelers will share a boat with other passengers.
Second Stop: Takachiho Small Train / Kamishikimi Kumanoza Shrine (Alternative during winter or train closure)
Ride the Takachiho small train slowly through the mountain valleys, enjoying the lush forests and stream scenery along the way. During winter or when the small train is not operating, the itinerary will change to a visit to Kamishikimi Kumanoza Shrine, where you can experience the tranquil shrine culture and the Senbon Torii (thousand torii gates). During the winter period from December 1st to February 28th, you will visit Kamishikimi Kumanoza Shrine instead of taking the Takachiho small train.
Third Stop: Kusasenri
Kusasenri is a vast grassland at the foot of Mount Aso, with lush green grass and distant volcanoes surrounding it, offering expansive and open views. Here, you can overlook the entire grassland and distant mountains, and also take photos along the grassland paths or with animals to add depth to your pictures.
Fourth Stop: Aso Volcano Crater
The Aso Volcano Crater is an active volcanic landscape where you can experience the geothermal heat and magnificent volcanic terrain up close. For photography, it is recommended to use foreground rocks or railings to add a sense of space, capture the moment the crater emits smoke, or use distant mountains to frame the crater, presenting a spectacular view. This is a highlight of the itinerary. If the Aso crater is closed, the itinerary will change to Kamishikimi Kumanoza Shrine.
These four attractions combine the beautiful canyon scenery of Takachiho Gorge, the cultural experience of a small train or shrine, the vast grasslands of Kusasenri, and the stunning terrain of the Aso Volcano crater. In just one day, you can experience the essence of Kyushu's nature and culture. Come and join us!

Reviews
great tour with an amazing guide Sun-san who is well versed with the history and information of all the attractions, his candid and lively explanation is a great highlight of the trip, and it's so refreshing to have a tour guide that shares what are not just the must tries and also what to avoid as well (souvenirs and snacks). the pace of the trip is great as well, and I appreciate that Sun-san was flexible to shuffle the sequence of attractions to visit to avoid the weekend crowd, that's really thoughtful! and not forgetting the main highlight of the trip visiting the beautiful Mt Aso (we didnt get to go there due to the recent accident), shrines and gorge! well planned and well paced - was an amazing trip in all and would highly recommend it!
I highly recommend our guide, Mr. Kong. He was very kind and dedicated to explaining the scenery, historical background, and local culture. The entire trip's itinerary was very smooth, and the experience was excellent. In addition to helping with photos and explanations at major attractions, he also introduced various small places we passed by on the tour bus, allowing us to unexpectedly learn a lot about local customs, traditions, and stories we hadn't known before. The weather in Takachiho was great today, but there were quite a few people for boating, making it easy to get congested, though the gorge itself was still incredibly beautiful. Since Mount Aso was closed, we went to Kamishikimi Kumanoza Shrine as an alternative. The shrine in the forest appeared even more solemn. For the last stop at Kusasenri for lunch, the guide also helped everyone with a strategy on how to eat, shop, and take photos most efficiently. The entire day's experience was wonderful.
My friends originally planned to rent a car for our trip on May 4, 2026, but we later realized it coincided with Japan's Golden Week. Concerned about driving safety, we opted for a one-day tour instead. It turned out to be incredibly convenient and allowed us to visit many places! We are very grateful to tour guide Kong for his detailed explanations throughout the trip, which provided a clear and easy-to-understand insight into Japanese culture. Although the itinerary was a bit tight, and we couldn't visit the volcano because it was closed, and there was no horse meat at Aso (only mango shaved ice), it was still very worthwhile :). Before reaching Kusasenri, we passed by a very cute Matcha Pudding Mountain. It was very cold at the top of the mountain, and our time was limited, so I recommend skipping the coffee queue and heading straight up to take photos, where you can overlook the volcano. Also, if possible, I suggest the tour description advise travelers to dress warmly, as I completely underestimated how cold it would be on the mountain this time. No wonder the guide wore a sweater and a down jacket… I recommend everyone going to bring a wool hat, otherwise, your hair will be a mess, making it hard to take pictures. The scenic train costs an additional 2300 JPY. There are only two small stalls selling snacks (sweets and drinks) and a small souvenir area inside the ticket station. The entire train ride is very enjoyable and has a retro feel. Everyone waves at you throughout the journey, which is very welcoming. The train has cute light displays when passing through tunnels, and the driver uses bubbles at the summit, but be careful not to drop your phone, as the wind was very strong that day, and holding a phone with one hand was risky. I recommend having some protective measure to secure your phone. Additionally, the towering trees at Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine are beautiful and magnificent. Climbing the stairs to the summit is also quite a rush, so you might not have time for a leisurely stroll. The very top is a unique cave entrance, but if you're really tired, it's perfectly fine to just visit the main shrine halfway up. You can buy the Goshuin (stamp) at the parking lot before getting back on the bus. One hour at Takachiho Gorge is plenty, and thankfully, we managed to go boating that day. If your package includes boating, it's quite amusing if you happen to be with a group of beginners who all get stuck at the gorge entrance. I was nervous when I first got on the boat, and capsizing or accidentally deploying the airbag costs 3000 JPY. However, there are always staff on hand to assist; if you get stuck or can't paddle, you can ask the guide for help, so it's very safe. 30 minutes of boating is enough time to paddle to the gorge and back. Overall, the entire trip was still wonderful, and I'm grateful for the good weather, which made for a very enjoyable experience and a beautiful memory ^_^
Ada, our guide, was the most fortunate presence on this trip! Her professionalism was outstanding. Her explanations throughout the tour were detailed and rich, covering history, culture, and points of interest along the way in a clear and easy-to-understand manner. She planned the itinerary logically and smoothly, and her pacing was excellent. Ada is cheerful and witty, with a great sense of humor, which made the atmosphere relaxed and enjoyable throughout the journey, never boring. She is sincere and enthusiastic, incredibly thoughtful and attentive, always looking out for every member of the group. Whether it was reminding us about the schedule, providing travel tips, or helping with small, impromptu requests, she patiently assisted everyone. Spending time with her was incredibly comfortable; she was reliable and warm-hearted, making the entire travel experience absolutely perfect. I highly recommend her!
Sun was our tour guide for the day, and he was fantastic. He’s very experienced and kept us entertained with plenty of fun stories throughout the bus journey. At every stop, he shared helpful tips and great recommendations on what to do, eat, and buy. He even suggested places to try after the tour ended, which we really appreciated. He helped every group taking photos as well. he makes sure everyone is well taken care of. Overall, we had a wonderful family experience. We’re so glad we chose the train and boat rides—they really helped us make the most of the day. The timing was just right, not rushed at all. Highly recommended!
Overall, we had a great time despite the rain and despite being unlucky with getting sat by a blacked out window. That made it difficult to enjoy the 1-2hr ride up and down. Our guide, Kong, did such an amazing job with guiding us and even had the group stop for photo ops where she took pictures of everyone. She genuinely wanted everyone to have a memorable experience and did an amazing job ensuring that. Thank you for the memorable experience!
Great value, beautiful gorge, interesting train ride, unique boat paddling experience, and our guide was very helpful, knowledgeable and entertaining. Overall, highly recommended if you stay in Kumamoto. Good schedule and plenty time was given at each location, didn't feel rushed.
This tour was an absolute dream come true! These spots have been on my wishlist for the longest time, and I’m so happy I finally got to see them. Starting the trip from Kumamoto made everything so convenient, and I was impressed that we could cover Takachiho Gorge, Kusasenri, Kamishikimi Shrine, and Takachiho Shrine all in a single day without feeling overly rushed. A special shoutout to our tour guide! Even though the primary language of the tour was Chinese, the guide was incredibly kind and went out of their way to explain everything in English for me. It made the experience so much more inclusive and enjoyable. If you're looking for an efficient and fun way to see the best of Kyushu, I highly recommend this trip!
Sun was an amazing tour guide. He's informative, helpful, and went above and beyond to make sure we understand everything and have the best time on the trip even in such a cold weather. He took pictures of everyone, gave us snacks, and even shared a list of restaurants to try around Kumamoto. Our driver was impressive as well, it started raining on our way home (with almost zero visibility) but he's able to drive us back to the city safely.
our tour guide ms kong is very helpful and provide interesting background and history information throughout the trip. she also showed us great photo spots and helped us take great photos. we are very grateful to have her. thank you.
