[Review] Ramadan Buffet at Four Points by Sheraton Kuala Lumpur
A sleek high-rise building with an exterior built out of exposed raw bricks, Four Points by Sheraton Kuala Lumpur is a modern hotel nestled in the heart of Chinatown, surrounded by historic buildings, local street vendors, hip cafes, restaurants, and bars.
In conjunction with Ramadan 2021, Quan's Kitchen, the all-day dining restaurant housed in Four Points by Sheraton Kuala Lumpur rolled out Bazar Selera, a unique Ramadan buffet with a delicious spread of not just nostalgic Malay flavours, but also ancient Silk Road specialties that you can't find at other Ramadan buffets around KL. From refreshing appetizers to yummy mains and an impressive dessert spread, you have to check it out one of these nights before the Ramadan month ends!
The Space
Featuring an open theatrical kitchen, a cosy and spacious layout, views of the KL cityscape from their huge windows and a warm vibe, Quan's Kitchen is the perfect spot to berbuka at with your loved ones this Ramadan. Tables are set apart carefully to adhere to social distancing measures and gloves are provided to all diners for hygiene purposes (you'll have to put them on when you get your food).
They have reduced the seating capacity of the restaurant to avoid overcrowding, so make sure you pre-book your vouchers on Klook as early as you can to reserve your seats and enjoy discounted rates.
The Food
Start Off With Something Refreshing
Start off your iftar dinner with some refreshing local appetizers such as rojak buah, all sorts of kerabu (kerabu ayam panggang, kerabu mangga sotong, kerabu ikan bilis, and more), and ulam-ulaman. For those who prefer Western salads, you can also get lots of fresh greens at the salad station. Once you're done with your appetizers, start digging into the mains! Keep reading for some of our favourite dishes you can expect at the Ramadan buffet.
Silk Road Specialties You Won't Want To Miss
The folks at Four Points by Sheraton Kuala Lumpur prides themselves in being bold, inventive, and adding a unique twist to the things they do. From Bak Kwa Crusted Mandarin Turkey for Christmas 2020 to yee sang featuring crispy satay fish and topped with Tanjung Malim T'Lur Caviar during Chinese New Year, we have been looking forward to their unique inventions every festive season!
This Ramadan, the buffet at Quan's Kitchen features Silk Road specialties you wouldn't have expected at a Ramadan Buffet such as traditional hand-pulled Lan Zhou La Mien and cumin slow-roasted lamb, best enjoyed with Uzbek Plov (Uzbekistan's classic rice dish).
Our favourite dish of the night was hands-down the Lan Zhou La Mien, you get to order it at the Live station and watch the chef prepare the noodles from scratch right before your eyes, which adds to the fun of the experience! Diners get to also choose your preferred thickness of noodles. The La Mien broth was hearty and mildly spicy, it was so good we had two bowls (only stopped ourselves from having a third so we could leave more space for other dishes).
Nostalgic Malay Flavours
What's a Ramadan buffet without local delicacies that are reminiscent of your kampung? Feast on classic Malay dishes such as paru goreng berempah, daging masak kicap cili api, ikan patin tempoyak, sambal udang petai, satay, otak-otak, ayam percik, sayur lodeh, and gulai daging ubi kentang. There's also sup tulang and bubur lambuk for those who love a comforting bowl of soup or congee.
Set at another corner of the restaurant where some diners may miss it, there's a little hawker-style stall where you can get freshly-made roti john! If you miss the food from Ramadan bazaars, make sure you grab a bite here. There's also yong tau foo at the stall next to it.
Seafood On Ice
For the ones who love fresh seafood, head straight to the Seafood On Ice section before other diners start crowding there! Pick out fresh prawns, scallops, black mussels, and flower crab, and pair them with your preferred sauces and lemon wedges.
End Your Meal On A Sweet Note
We were honestly very pleasantly surprised with the impressive dessert spread at Quan's Kitchen. From traditional kuih muih such as Sarawak kek lapis, seri muka and tapai pulut to Western treats like mochi, chocolate eclair, petit tiramisu and marble cheesecake, you'll be spoilt for choice at the desserts section. They also have a chocolate fountain (with assorted fruit skewers and marshmallows), ice kacang, bubur kacang hijau, agar-agar, cendol, ice cream, and pisang goreng!
#KlookTip: Ditch the "I'll take dessert last once I finish eating everything else!" mentality - if you love dessert, make sure you get some you wish to try early on to avoid disappointment. The best kuihs run out quickly once it's time to buka!
The Verdict
While the buffet spread at Quan's Kitchen isn't the most extensive, the flavours of everything we tried were on-point, showing that quality triumphs quantity, even at buffets. We also felt especially comfortable dining in the spacious restaurant seeing how they take their safety measures seriously, even though it's at the expense of accommodating much fewer diners as if they didn't adhere to the rules so strictly. Overall, we had a really pleasant and enjoyable dining experience and can't wait to be back next year - hopefully when the pandemic is over.
