Free trip to Rabbit Island in Hiroshima 🐇

A short 1.5 hours away from Osaka via bullet train, Hiroshima is home to the world-famous rabbit island (Okunoshima) and “floating” torii gate. On top of that, it also caters to foodies by having a building full of okonomiyaki eateries, each stall giving an Okinawan twist to a traditional Osakan favourite.
Being so close to Osaka and housing its own international airport also means Hiroshima is rising in popularity as a quick getaway when tourists get enough of Dotonburi.
For a limited time, when tourists book a 5 Day JR Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass from Klook, they’ll get an “upgrade” to their trip in the form of a free pass to Okunoshima, famously known as Japan’s Rabbit Island.
🚨Important Klook Tip🚨: Prices for the Whole Japan JR Pass and many of the JR Regional Passes will increase this October 2023. Beat the price hike by booking your JR Passes with Klook by 30 Sep! Perfect for those planning to travel to Japan by 28 Dec ✈️

    What to expect at Okunoshima

    rabbit island okunoshima
Okunoshima is a magical land for bunny lovers. If you come prepared with food, you’ll easily be the most popular human on the island — until someone else shows up with a bigger bag of food. You’re allowed to bring as much food as you like to the island, and I actually witnessed an older local woman carrying 4 full bags of cabbage onto the ferry.
Okunoshima’s reputation as Japan’s “rabbit island” is well-deserved and you won’t be able to walk 100 metres in any direction on Okunoshima without seeing a rabbit, so how walkable the island is is entirely up to you.
    • Here are a few tips to make the most of your trip:
Rabbits can be naughty and quite aggressive when hungry, so you’ll have to keep your food out of the rabbits’ leaping range
    • You can buy rabbit food at the ferry terminal for 100 yen. 2 cups are more than enough for the whole day
    • If you find yourself getting groceries the day before your visit, you can grab some extra cabbage and carrots for the bunnies

    How to get to Okunoshima

Getting to Okunoshima is virtually impossible via public transport without a JR Pass. To get there, use your JR Pass from JR Hiroshima Station to JR Tadanoumi Station, where you can walk to Tadanoumi Port. There, you can purchase the ferry ticket as well as rabbit food at the store before boarding the ferry.
If you, however, got the free Okunoshima trip by booking the 5 Day JR Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass via Klook, all you’ll have to do is show up at Hiroshima Station at 8:50 am on the day of your booking, and all the transportation will be provided.

Booking Kansai/Hiroshima JR Passes on Klook

If you’re heading to Japan in the next 6 months and you’re concerned about the language barrier, booking your JR Pass via Klook completely bypasses this issue. All the information is readily available in English, with clear explanations of how and which pass should be used.
There’s also a JR Pass page that clearly illustrates which pass you’ll require for your trip, and for what price. You’ll also get instant confirmation of your booking, which helps set your mind at ease if you’re the meticulous planner type.

You’ll get to see Hiruzen Highlands on the free Okayama bus tour.
Plus, if you’re in the mood for freebies but are planning on staying only within the Kansai area, you can book the 5 Day JR Kansai WIDE Area Pass, which gives you access to Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe, and even places like Kinosaki, famous for its onsens, and Okayama.
If you book either the 5 Day JR Kansai WIDE Area Pass or 5 Day JR Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass via Klook, for a limited time, you’ll also get a complimentary full-day bus tour of Okayama. The bus tour will include venturing to a waterfall where you might meet Japanese monkeys, free Japanese set lunch or buffet, and a perfect view of the sunset over Seto Inland Sea from Washuzan Observatory.
Japan is far more than its most famous cities. There are hidden gems to find in almost every pocket of the country, and that’s the advantage of having an unlimited travel JR pass gives you. Booking and identifying the right JR Passes used to be much harder as we had to rely on Google Translate and word-of-mouth, but Klook has simplified all that into a “Google Maps”-style JR Pass page, where you just key in the locations you want to visit and the passes you need will automatically be displayed.

    Safe travels in Japan! 🇯🇵
