While Japan is widely known for its always-amazing bullet trains (Shinkansen), enchanting cherry blossoms, and incredibly designed capital, there’s a laid-back side to the country that isn’t talked about enough! Luckily, we were able to spend some time with Wataru Masuda, our General Manager for Japan, who shared with us his top hidden gem, what it’s known for, what you can expect, and what makes it his favorite.

In the westernmost part of Fukuoka Prefecture is a charming seaside city where you can find serene sunsets, beautiful beaches, and an overall restful vibe – this is Itoshima. So if you’re craving for an escape from the everyday hustle, you’ve come to the right article! Join us to uncover the lesser-known side of Japan with our very own Japan Klooker, Wataru, as he shares with us his favorite hidden gem in his home country.

Q: Can you share with us one of your favorite lesser-known spots in your home country and what makes it so special to you?

Wataru: My hidden gem place in my home country, Japan, is Itoshima inside Fukuoka prefecture. It's very commutable from Fukuoka Airport, [you can expect a lot of] nature and quiet places with fine foods and cafes. I visit here once a year to have a relaxed time.

Q: How did you come across this hidden gem? Was it recommended or did you discover it on your own?

Wataru: Actually my wife is from Fukuoka and her family is living in Itoshima, so I came across this place. Itoshima has been popular nowadays, but I haven't seen too many inbound tourists back in 2019.

Q: What activities did you enjoy in Itoshima that you feel others should experience as well?

Wataru: If you use social networks, then you should know that Itoshima is an Instagramable place. Sakurai Futamigaura is officially chosen among the top 100 scenic beaches in Japan. Raizan Sennyoji Temple is a sacred Buddhist Temple with a history of more than 1,300 years.
In addition, there are tons of cute cafes with fine coffee and teas. If you like seafood, Itoshima Oyster Hut is a must-try, you can enjoy really good quality oysters at less than half price vs. other locations.
Last but not least, did you know that Ichiran Ramen (I believe this is the most famous ramen in Japan) is produced in Itoshima? You can see the Ichiran factory when you visit Ichiran-no-Mori.

Q: How do you feel locals, like yourself, contribute to the charm and authenticity of this hidden gem?

Wataru: The local people in Itoshima don't rush, they don't walk on the escalators and look really relaxed all the time. I can feel that the time goes slow in this area.

Q: How has this hidden gem influenced your perception of your home country?

Wataru: We should not only think about Tokyo and Osaka. We really have more hidden nature places to relax, without any crowded trains and noisy environments.
