What to expect
Maria Island National Park is a haven for nature, wildlife, and a time gone by. Free of cars and crowds, this small island off Tasmania's east coast keeps its own pace, wild, quiet, and steeped in history. Home to wombats, wallabies, Cape Barren Geese and Tasmanian Devils, Maria Island is one of the best places in Tasmania to see native wildlife up close. We aim to cover as much ground as the day allows, tackling a selection of Maria's celebrated Great Short Walks, from the world heritage listed Darlington probation convict camp to surreal coastal rock formations and ancient fossil beds, allowing plenty of time for the wildlife to distract us along the way. With more than 10kms of hiking possible, wear your comfortable shoes and charge up your camera, ready for a Tasmanian Adventure.

you get to spend ~5 hrs on Maria Island, recommend joining the tour as the guide knows where the wild animals are and you can easily get lost on the island. it was 17000+ steps for the day, so I would suggest doing this if you’re physically fit. if you are, this is highly recommended. this is the exact Tasmania you want to see!

really recommend this trip for anyone who is visiting Tasmania! the beauty of Maria island is not to be missed! and our guide, Lucas was really great; able to show us spots to see the beautiful wild lives Maria Island has to offer; and gave us ample of time for photo takings and soaking in the moment. but definitely be well prepared for 4 hours of walking, and some steep road/ hill as well. definitely will recommend this trip!! thanks Lucas if you’re reading this! you’re awesome and can see you truly enjoy this job!!
Everything was great, the guide explained it to you all the time. We walked around the island for several hours, but it wasn't difficult at all. We saw many kangaroos and especially Wombats. The island is super beautiful. 100% recommendable.
The tour guide was very professional. Not only introducing us the Tasmania animal, such as wombat and wallaby, but also giving us detailed information about different parts of the island.
Matt is a very humorous and knowledgeable guide who’s clearly passionate about what he does. He taught us a lot about the wildlife on Maria Island as well as its history. We even learned how to identify animals by their poops🤣The views on Maria Island are absolutely stunning and well worth a full day of hiking. Highly recommend this experience.
Maria Island is a very beautiful island and I would recommend it to everyone. It is rich in nature and has a beautiful sea. I was also able to see cute wombats, which made me very satisfied. The guide was friendly, knowledgeable, and very fun. I would like to go again.
see a lot of wild animals - wallaby, pademelon , and my most favorite wombats with their babies. the cliffs are amazing especially painted cliff
A 4-hour walking exploration in the wilderness, where we saw wildlife. The guide was very professional and explained everything carefully, reminding us in advance to prepare lunch. We sat on the beach to enjoy the scenery, then went to Painted Cliffs. Everything was a work of natural art.

Good to know
- Our summer tours (Oct–Apr) take advantage of the longer days, aiming to cover the full Painted Cliffs and Fossil Cliffs circuits, with time to explore Darlington.
- Winter tours (May–Sept) are shorter days, with a guide-led exploration tailored to the conditions on the day.
- The Painted Cliffs circuit is a 4.5km round trip, taking in surreal, wave-carved sandstone stained with iron oxide.
- The Fossil Cliffs circuit is another4.5km loop, with exposed marine fossils around 300 million years old. Between the two, and time spent exploring Darlington, more than 10km of walking is possible on a full summer day. Good walking shoes are recommended.-
- There are no cars or shops on the Island. Please come prepared for a big day out in a National Park.
- Due to the tight timeline to meet the Ferry - we can not wait for late passengers. Please ensure you arrive 10 minutes early to the meeting point.
- All wildlife viewing will be led respectfully by our Eco-Certified Tour Guides
