Salvatore is the best, and so is driver Tony. They did a superb job. The itinerary was well-planned, and the tour guide and leader were excellent. It was a pleasant trip. It was truly great that we had a private boat for our group, with no other people joining us!

The tour guide was friendly and spoke English, Spanish, and Italian. The travel time was a bit long, but that's understandable given the distance from the city center.

The scenery was beautiful and the tour guide's explanations were clear. However, it would have been even better if the tour guide spoke Chinese. It's a shame there wasn't enough time, but it's definitely worth going.

Had a great tour with Sonia as our guide. Though the tour is pricey compared to going ourselves, it saves us on the logistics. The exclusive boat tour was nice.

I had a great time on this trip and would definitely recommend it! The day started near Milano Centrale, where we met our group. A lovely surprise was when our driver, Alfonso, gave a rose to all the women on the tour♡ a wonderful way to start the day. Our first stop was Como, which was beautiful, followed by Bellagio, my favorite destination. I only wish we had more time there. Our guide, Sonia, was fantastic and gave great recommendations at every stop, from places to see to cafés, pastry shops, and local treats. The boat ride on Lake Como was another highlight, with stunning views of the lake and famous villas while Sonia shared interesting information along the way. We ended the day in Lugano, Switzerland, which felt like a hidden gem. The scenery was beautiful, the atmosphere was relaxed, and it felt less crowded than other destinations. Overall, it was a well-organized tour with amazing views, great guidance, and memorable experiences.

I wanted to have Lake cruise and like be near the lake for which I took this trip. And our guide Mateo as well as our driver Tony were both superb. Mateo gave a lot of guidance and details about Como, Bellagio and Lugano. And Tony would help us across the streets from the bus in case of constant traffic due to single lanes. The lake trip was very calming and relaxing. Even if the trip was full day for me it wasn't tiring as in this one, I didn't walk a lot in my free time, but rather just sat near the lake sides.

Exploring Lake Como: A Guide to Hopping Between its Most Famous Towns

Lake Como

Exploring Lake Como is a captivating journey best experienced from the water, where a ferry becomes your key to unlocking the region's enchanting treasures. Gliding across the deep blue lake with the dramatic Alps as a constant backdrop, you can hop between the jewels of the central lake: wandering the steep, flower-lined alleyways of romantic Varenna, discovering the chic boutiques along the elegant promenade of Bellagio, or stepping into the magnificent botanical gardens of a historic villa like Villa Carlotta. Each stop invites you to embrace "La Dolce Vita"—pausing for an espresso in a sun-drenched piazza, admiring the opulent history, and simply soaking in the unparalleled scenery. This seamless blend of stunning nature, charming villages, and aristocratic splendor makes exploring Lake Como an unforgettable Italian dream come to life.

Cultural and Historical Significance

Lake Como's cultural significance stems from a rich history spanning over two millennia, beginning when it served as a luxurious retreat for Roman aristocrats. This tradition of elite patronage blossomed from the Renaissance through the 19th-century "Grand Tour," when wealthy noble families built the magnificent villas and spectacular gardens that define the shoreline today, such as Villa Carlotta and Villa Balbianello. This era also cemented the lake's reputation as a powerful muse for famed artists, writers, and composers who were captivated by its romantic and dramatic scenery. This legacy of glamour and inspiration continues into the modern era, with the lake becoming a global icon featured in blockbuster films and serving as a tranquil haven for celebrities, making its stunning landscape not just a work of nature, but a masterpiece curated by centuries of history.

It's a haven for nature lovers, offering trails that lead you through some of the most untouched and beautiful landscapes around Lake Como. Lace up your hiking boots and get ready to discover the wild charm of Val Sanagra.

What are the best things to do and see on Lake Como?

Must-Visit Towns

Bellagio Italy

The charm of Lake Como lies in its enchanting lakeside towns, each with its own unique personality.

  • Bellagio: Often called the "Pearl of the Lake," Bellagio is famous for its chic boutiques, lush gardens, and timeless allure. Located perfectly at the tip of the promontory where the lake splits, it offers stunning views in every direction.

  • Varenna: A romantic and peaceful village known for its colorful houses that cascade down to the water's edge. It's a dreamy destination with beautiful lakeside walks and a more tranquil atmosphere than Bellagio.

  • Menaggio: This town boasts an elegant lakefront promenade, a dramatic mountain backdrop, and a perfect balance of nature and leisure, making it a popular base for exploring the central lake area.

  • Como: The largest town on the lake, Como offers a wonderful mix of culture and beauty. It features a majestic cathedral, lively historic squares, and a charming old town perfect for exploring.

Spectacular Villas and Gardens

Lake Como is world-famous for its magnificent villas with stunning botanical gardens that are open to the public.

  • Villa Balbianello (Tremezzina): Arguably the most breathtaking villa on the lake, famous for its elaborate terraced gardens and as a filming location for movies like Star Wars and Casino Royale.

  • Villa Carlotta (Tremezzina): A stunning villa and botanical garden that is a must-see, especially in spring when its rhododendrons and azaleas are in full bloom.

  • Villa Monastero (Varenna): This historic villa features a long and beautiful botanical garden that stretches along the lakefront, offering incredible views and a diverse collection of rare plants.

  • Gardens of Villa Melzi (Bellagio): A beautiful example of an English-style landscape garden, perfect for a peaceful and scenic stroll along the Bellagio shoreline.

Exploring Lake Como by Boat

The most scenic way to experience Lake Como is from the water, and you have three great options: the public ferry, a self-drive boat rental, or a private boat with a captain. Here's what to expect from each:

  • Ferry: Lake Como's ferry network connects many of the lake's most charming towns, including Bellagio, Como, Varenna, Menaggio, Cadenabbia, Lenno, Nesso, and Tremezzina. Tickets can be purchased easily at the small kiosks by the jetties, with no advance booking required.

  • Self-Drive Boat Rental: Even without a boating license, you can rent a small boat and explore the lake at your own pace. This option offers the most freedom—stop for a swim, anchor by the famous Civera Bridge in Nesso, or simply enjoy cruising. Prices range from €75 to €350 (excluding fuel), depending on rental duration. Providers include Lake by Boat, Cadenzanni Lake Como Boat Rental, Lake Como Boat, and Como Lake Boats.

  • Private Boat with Captain: For the most exclusive experience, book a private boat with a captain. While this is the priciest option, it allows you to relax and soak in the scenery aboard elegant vessels, including the iconic wood-paneled boats. Companies such as Non Solo Barche, Como Classic Boats, Taxi Boat Varenna, and Bellano Water Taxi all offer private tours tailored to your schedule.

Varenna Lake Como

One-Day Tour of Lake Como

A one-day tour of Lake Como is a whirlwind journey through the heart of its most enchanting scenery, best achieved by starting early and using the efficient ferry service to explore the iconic "Golden Triangle." Your day could begin by taking a train from Milan to the charming and colorful village of Varenna, where you can wander its steep, romantic alleyways and enjoy a morning cappuccino by the water. From there, a short and scenic ferry ride takes you to the luxurious pearl of the lake, Bellagio, the perfect spot to enjoy a leisurely lunch, browse the chic boutiques, and stroll through the magnificent gardens of Villa Melzi. In the afternoon, another boat trip can whisk you across to Menaggio to soak in the views from its elegant lakeside promenade with a gelato in hand before taking the ferry back to your starting point. This classic itinerary offers an unforgettable taste of Lake Como's magic, seamlessly blending breathtaking alpine landscapes, opulent history, and the irresistible charm of its lakeside villages into a single, perfect day.

Hike a Nature Trail

To truly appreciate the dramatic beauty where the Alps meet the water, you need to explore the hills surrounding Lake Como. The area is a paradise for walkers and hikers, with well-marked trails offering everything from gentle strolls to challenging mountain climbs.

  • The Lake Como Greenway: This is the perfect choice for a relaxing and scenic walk without any strenuous climbing. The Greenway is a gentle, 10-kilometer-long path on the western shore of the lake, connecting the charming villages of Colonno, Sala Comacina, Ossuccio, Lenno, Mezzegra, Tremezzo, and Griante. The walk takes you through ancient hamlets with stone houses, past the entrances to grand villas like Villa Balbianello and Villa Carlotta, through olive groves, and along beautiful lakeside stretches. It's a fantastic way to experience the authentic, slower-paced life of the lakeside villages while enjoying consistently stunning views. The path is well-maintained and suitable for all fitness levels.

  • Spina Verde Park (near Como): For those seeking a more rugged, nature-focused hike, the Spina Verde Regional Park offers a network of more challenging trails in the hills directly above the town of Como. These paths wind through dense forests of chestnut and oak trees, leading you past historical sites like the Baradello Castle and ancient rock engravings. The reward for your effort is a series of incredible viewpoints that provide a breathtaking panorama over the city of Como and the southern end of the lake. These trails are ideal for more experienced hikers looking for a true nature immersion.

Relax on a Beach

While Lake Como is an alpine lake and not a classic sandy beach destination, there are many wonderful spots to swim, sunbathe, and enjoy the refreshing, crystal-clear water, especially during the warm summer months. You generally have two options:

  • Public Beaches (Spiaggia Pubblica): These are free-to-access areas, often with pebble or grassy shores. They are popular with locals and offer a more authentic, laid-back atmosphere. While they have fewer amenities, they are perfect for laying down a towel, having a picnic, and taking a dip in the clean waters. The central and northern parts of the lake are particularly recommended for the best and cleanest public swimming spots.

  • Private Lidos: A lido is essentially a private beach club and offers a more luxurious and comfortable experience. For an entrance fee, you get access to a perfectly maintained area with amenities such as sun loungers, umbrellas, changing rooms, showers, and often a swimming pool that floats on or sits next to the lake. Many lidos also have a stylish bar and restaurant, creating a chic, resort-like vibe. Booking a spot at a lido is a fantastic way to spend a relaxing afternoon in comfort and style.

Take a Cooking Class

For a truly immersive and delicious cultural experience, a cooking class is an unforgettable way to connect with the heart of Italian life. In a beautiful setting like Bellagio, a typical class goes far beyond simply following a recipe.

You will usually be welcomed into the home or private kitchen of a local chef. The experience is hands-on, where you'll learn the secrets of authentic regional cuisine, focusing on fresh, seasonal ingredients. You might learn to make fresh pasta from scratch (like ravioli or tagliatelle), prepare a classic risotto, or create a perfect tiramisu for dessert. The class is often a fun, social event where you'll cook alongside a small group, sharing stories and a glass of local wine. The best part is always at the end, when you get to sit down and enjoy the multi-course meal you helped create, often in a beautiful garden or on a terrace with a view of the lake. It's a wonderful way to take a piece of Italian culture home with you.

Where To Stay: A Guide to the Best Towns to Stay

Choosing where to stay at Lake Como is a key part of planning your trip, as each town offers a very different atmosphere and experience. The best location for you depends entirely on your travel style, budget, and what you want to do. Here is a detailed guide to the best areas to stay on Lake Como.

The "Golden Triangle": The Heart of the Lake

This is the most popular and scenic area, located in the central part of the lake where its three branches meet. The towns here are well-connected by a constant ferry service, making it the perfect base for first-time visitors who want to explore the most famous sights.

Bellagio: The Luxurious Jewel

  • Best for: First-timers, luxury travelers, honeymooners, and those who want to be in the center of the action.

  • Atmosphere: Known as the "Pearl of the Lake," Bellagio is impeccably beautiful, glamorous, and bustling. It's filled with high-end boutiques, elegant villas (like Villa Melzi), manicured gardens, and upscale restaurants. Its position at the tip of the peninsula offers stunning, dual-sided views.

  • Pros: Absolutely gorgeous, very central for ferry travel, plenty of dining and shopping options.

  • Cons: It is the most crowded and most expensive town on the lake. The streets can be very steep.

Varenna: The Romantic Charmer

  • Best for: Couples, photographers, and those seeking a romantic and slightly quieter base.

  • Atmosphere: Varenna is incredibly picturesque, with steep, cobblestone alleyways, colorful houses cascading down to the water, and a beautiful lakeside promenade called the Passeggiata degli Innamorati (Lover's Walk). It feels more authentic and less overtly commercial than Bellagio.

  • Pros: Stunningly beautiful, has a more relaxed vibe than Bellagio, and is the only town in the "Golden Triangle" with a direct train station, making it very easy to get to from Milan.

  • Cons: It's smaller, with fewer shopping and dining options than Bellagio. It gets very busy during the day.

Menaggio: The Versatile & Practical Hub

  • Best for: Families, active travelers, hikers, and those looking for a practical base with more amenities.

  • Atmosphere: Menaggio has a more open, resort-town feel with a beautiful long lakefront promenade and a lively main piazza. It feels a bit more like a "real" town than a pure tourist village.

  • Pros: Great ferry connections, flatter and easier to walk around than Varenna or Bellagio, has a public lido (beach club) with a pool, and offers excellent access to hiking and cycling trails in the surrounding hills.

  • Cons: While beautiful, it's generally considered slightly less picturesque than Varenna or Bellagio.

The Main City: Como

Como: The Bustling Gateway City

  • Best for: Budget travelers, short trips (1-2 nights), shoppers, and those who prefer a city atmosphere with more nightlife.

  • Atmosphere: Como is a proper city, not a small village. It has a beautiful historic center (città murata), a magnificent cathedral (Duomo), high-end shopping streets, and a wide variety of restaurants and bars.

  • Pros: Excellent transport links, including two train stations with direct connections to Milan and Switzerland. Generally more affordable accommodation and food options. You can also take a funicular up to the village of Brunate for spectacular views.

  • Cons: It is located at the very southern end of the lake, so it takes a much longer ferry ride (up to 2 hours) to reach the famous mid-lake towns like Bellagio and Varenna. The scenery is less dramatic than in the central lake area.

What To Eat At Lake Como

Al Prato (Varenna)

Often considered the best restaurant in Varenna, Al Prato serves a menu that changes daily but always features fresh pasta, seafood, and meats. The restaurant is tiny, so reservations are strongly recommended.

Bar Il Molo (Varenna)

A charming waterfront bar and café with unbeatable views of the village and a small beach. Hugely popular in high season---be prepared for a wait if you want one of its coveted tables.

Bistrot Antichi Sapori (Bellagio)

A casual Bellagio eatery offering a wide variety of Italian favorites including bruschetta, pasta, pizza, meat, and fish. Great for a relaxed meal in town.

Dai Viga Pasta Fresca (Bellagio)

An affordable pasta shop on a small square in Bellagio. Quick and delicious, guests choose from fresh pastas and homemade sauces for a meal ready in minutes.

Gelateria del Borgo (Bellagio)

Arguably the best gelato in Bellagio, located at the top of the village. Flavors rotate daily and range from tropical fruits like mango and passion fruit to classics such as chocolate, mint, and coffee.

Giacomo al Lago (Tremezzo)

Set lakeside at the Grand Hotel Tremezzo, this vibrant outdoor restaurant bursts with retro Italian style in its iconic orange-and-white décor. Known for seafood specialties, standouts include linguine with lobster, spaghetti with clams, and gnocchi with langoustines.

La Locanda Tremezzo (Tremezzo)

A casual dining spot right along the main road in Tremezzo. Expect homemade pasta dishes and fresh seafood prepared with simple, authentic flavors.

Piazza Roma Como (Como)

A cozy little restaurant in Como serving freshly made pastas along with a selection of seafood and meat options.

Ristoro Forma e Gusto (Bellagio)

Tucked along a charming alleyway, this budget-friendly restaurant offers all the classics—pizza, pasta, calzones, and bruschetta that's a must-try.

Trattoria San Giacomo (Bellagio)

Perched at the top of Salita Serbelloni, one of Lake Como's most photographed streets, this trattoria is known for its unbeatable atmosphere. Grab an outdoor table if you can—the setting is pure magic.

  • Why Go? For a powerful dose of fashion, history, and urban energy. It's Italy's capital of style and the most common gateway city for Lake Como.

  • What to Do: A day trip to Milan is a must for many. You can marvel at the magnificent Duomo di Milano, the city's stunning Gothic cathedral (be sure to visit the rooftop for incredible views). Walk through the luxurious Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, one of the world's oldest shopping malls. Art lovers should book months in advance to see Leonardo da Vinci's iconic masterpiece, "The Last Supper." The city is also a paradise for shoppers, from high-end designer boutiques to trendy local shops.

  • What to Do: The city of Lugano, on the shores of Lake Lugano, is known for its beautiful lakeside promenade, chic shopping street (Via Nassa), and the beautiful Parco Ciani. For the best views, take a funicular up one of the surrounding mountains, such as Monte San Salvatore or Monte Brè, which offer breathtaking panoramas of the lake and the Alps. You'll need your passport for the border crossing.

Bergamo

  • Why Go? To discover one of Lombardy's most enchanting and well-preserved historic cities, offering a rich cultural experience without the crowds of Milan.

The modern Città Bassa (Lower City) is where you'll arrive, but the real jewel is the ancient, walled Città Alta (Upper City), perched on a hilltop and accessible by a historic funicular. You can spend hours wandering its cobblestone streets, exploring the beautiful Piazza Vecchia, visiting the grand Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, and enjoying spectacular views from the old city walls.

St. Moritz, Switzerland (via the Bernina Express)

  • Why Go? For one of the most spectacular scenic train journeys in the world, a bucket-list experience that takes you through the heart of the Swiss Alps.

  • What to Do: This is an all-day excursion focused on the journey itself. From the northern part of Lake Como (or by taking a train from Varenna), you travel to the Italian border town of Tirano. There, you board the famous Bernina Express. This train travels on a UNESCO World Heritage railway line, climbing over the breathtaking Bernina Pass, past glaciers and alpine lakes, before descending into the glamorous resort town of St. Moritz. After a few hours exploring St. Moritz, you take the train back.

  • How to Get There: From Varenna, take a regional train to Tirano (approx. 90 minutes). The Bernina Express departs from Tirano. It's a long but incredibly rewarding day trip.

Lake Maggiore & The Borromean Islands

  • Why Go? To explore another of Italy's great lakes, famous for its elegant towns and a stunning trio of privately owned islands.

  • What to Do: The main attraction on Lake Maggiore is visiting the Borromean Islands by ferry from the town of Stresa. Isola Bella is the most famous, featuring a lavish Baroque palace and incredible terraced gardens. Isola Madre is known for its lush, English-style botanical garden, while Isola dei Pescatori is a charming and rustic fishermen's island.

  • How to Get There: Getting to Lake Maggiore from Lake Como is easiest by car (approx. 1-1.5 hours). By train, it's possible but requires a few changes, usually via Milan.
