Ranong Province

The dry season from November to April is the best time. During these months, the weather is drier, the islands are accessible, and the Saturday Walking Street market runs. Ranong is statistically the wettest province in Thailand, with a rainy season from May to October when boat services may be limited and many tourist businesses reduce hours.

AirAsia operates direct flights from Bangkok's Don Mueang Airport (DMK) to Ranong Airport (UNN), taking approximately 1.5 hours. By bus, coaches depart Bangkok's Southern Bus Terminal to Ranong in about 8–9 hours. An alternative is to take a train from Bangkok to Chumphon (~7–8 hours) then a 2.5-hour bus west to Ranong. From Phuket, the drive via Highway 4 takes about 4–5 hours.

Ranong town is navigable by red songthaew (shared pickups, ~20–30 THB) or motorcycle taxi. To reach Ranong Pier for ferries to Koh Phayam, take a songthaew or tuk-tuk (150–200 THB). Renting a scooter (available through guesthouses or Pon's Place travel agency) is the most practical way to explore hot springs, viewpoints, and waterfalls independently.

Ranong Town Center is the ideal base, within walking distance of the Old Market, hot springs, and departure points for Koh Phayam ferries. If you prefer nature immersion, bungalows near Raksawarin Hot Springs or along Ngao National Park provide a greener setting. Koh Phayam has a growing selection of beachfront bungalows and small resorts for island-focused stays.
